Yo! I relapse the most past 20:00 when i'm tired and on my computer. I want to get into reading as something to distract myself as I get tired for bed.

The problem is that I am not really a 'reader'. I don't know what books to start on so I was hoping you guys could assist me.........

So you know what I like, I enjoyed Enders Game, The Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter and stuff like that. I didn't like Game of Thrones. The books were too big, boring and complicated for me.
soooooo, any suggestions on where I should start?

Read the fanfiction Harry Potter and the methods of rationality
Read Marcus Aurelius' "Meditations" (its not about meditating but it can be used to meditate, you'll get it if you read it)

Philip Pullman - His Dark Materials. Based on what you say you like you will love it.

  6. I know some people have negative opinions, but I loved the Hunger Games series. I think, given your other book interests, you'd probably enjoy them. They're well written and have a unique plot.

I haven't read the books yet, but Divergent and Maze Runner are two other popular series that I've heard are good, and I enjoyed the movies for the most part. Sometimes it's best to try out a series, because that way if you enjoy it, you know you have a couple more books you'll also enjoy.

One of my favorite solo books, though, is Paper Towns by John Green. It's sort of a romance, but also just a good adventure story, written from a male teen perspective. It's amazingly written. Some of the best first person writing I've ever seen, honestly.

Why don't you read books in subjects where you want to improve in instead of fiction?

Keep fiction for the last hour before bed?

You can always go to your local library and get books from there. That's what I like to do.

John Grisham books are great if you are into mystery books.

Based on your tastes I would recommend Hyperion for scifi by Dan Simmons, and the way of kings series by Brandon Sanderson for fantasy. The Sanderson books are long, but they're easy reads and entertaining. Or try the Rothfus book Name of the Wind and it's sequel.

Also, have you read the other books in the enders game series? There are mixed opinions, but I thought books 2 and 3 were worth reading.

What made me love reading, was reading books that I like, not those needed for school (in the past). I started with detective books and they made me love reading again.

Not exactly a response to your question, but consider that feeling tired enough to sleep without urges may also help you. Do exercise an hour before bed, shower then go straight to sleep. People's reward circuits make you crave instant-gratification endorphin hits through engaging in the eating of sugary food and PMO if you stay up late past a certain point in your circadian rhythm. If you are too tired to reach this point the cravings would be less.

On to the reading: what will really help is if you ask yourself what it is about the books you like that you actually like. Search out more books like that. Or better: just as you should be engaging in real life sexual relationships rather than passively consuming porn on your own, try being more active with your reading. Summarise each chapter. Join a book club where you can discuss the books and share opinion and insight. Start your own short stories or novels. It feels so much more rewarding and worthwhile to create than to consume.

Since doing NoFap. I have loved reading more than I thought I would have done. I've been reading Karl Pilkington's The Moaning of Life lately. Hilarious and entertaining read.

Yes, I have seen An Idiot Abroad. Love that show, and looking at his perspective and outlook on life which really adds the humour to it. He's also wrote a book about that too.

Have you watched/listened to Karl Pilkington on The Ricky Gervais Show podcasts? They're hilarious.

Another thank you to everyone! I have been reading a book on programming for university at the moment but I've got a huge list of reading material which i'll be starting by the end of the week.
To those who said to try out my own likes: my problem is that I don't really know what I like other than the books i have listed but hopefully I will find some books from everyone's suggestions that I really like and that will show me the right direction.

To break this down. What genre of books would you like to read? Fiction or non-fiction? Then narrow it down from there.
