PMO abstinence and severe depression

    Greetings!
    Recently I have been diagnosed with moderately severe depressive episode. I've been on medication (antidepressants, SSRI-class to be specific) for over a month now. During these thirty days I experienced various mood swings - some days I've been feeling crippled, devasted, I would experience some excessive anxiety impulses, and I have not been able to contain them. But, on the contrary, I have this mildly elevated mood improvements, however, they fade away quicker than they've come. My psychiatrist is now observing my behavioural patterns for possible bipolar disorder. Nothing certain can be said right at the moment, although I'm fearing that my condition has quite deep roots I haven't reached yet.
    Any of you guys on the same wagon? What is your experience in the context with PMO addiction and medication? Which is the most successful type of antidepressant that currently exists in the market?

    I am not one to shit on pharmaceutical medication, but I would strongly reccomend you research other causes of depression. For many people, carbohydrates, especially refined sources cause depression. My wife had taken anti depressants for over 10 years, until she discovered that her depression was primarily caused by consumption of sugar.

    I am not saying DONT use medication, I am only saying do research and look into wholistic approaches. For my wife, 5-HTP at night, no sugar, and a very low carb diet have completely reduced her “severe depression” to just situational depression, aka the type we all have to work through.

    Also, porn and masterbation ABSOLUTELY perpetuate depression. Your body has to regulate from that insanely hard dopamine kick, then your brain starts the withdrawal cycle. Get your blood checked and make sure you are not deficient on any crucial vitamins. Way too many people opt for the easy “solution” of pharmaceuticals just to only ever find a 20-40% improvement and consistent increase in dosage over time.

    Yea i would agree with RecoveringLion. I use to suffer from severe depression as well. What i deduced it down to was, habit of negative thoughts. Definitely no porn and no social media man. Id recommend reading up on stoicism to help get the right thoughts going. I know its hard but you can do it. Good Luck Brother

    I have depression and take SSRI. You asked what is the most successful type of antidepressant that currently exists in the market. It depends from your depression, some SSRI like escitalopram targets depression only, other like paroxetine targets depression with anxiety, so it's probably impossible to say what is the most succesfull, I think it's a very individual process, it's possible that you'll need to try fews meds before you'll find what works the best for you. But try to use only the original ones (like Cipralex for escitalopram), as there are some cheaper substitutes in the market and they usually tend to have more severe side effects.

    Also some supplements like magnesium might be useful when treating depression. I also read 5-HTP is good, but didn't tried it yet.

    I've been on SSRI's (Fluoxetine) for a long time. My goal for this journey is to stop them if I can successfully reboot.

    Very few people are clinically depressed, it's almost always a symptom of something in your life.

    Yeah, I've been on a diet and I've reduced taking any products with refined sugar. I'm drinking more water, less coffee and I've increased the consumption of green tea, because it contains vital antioxidants. I'm also an avid consumer of natural honey.
    However, I think there are many contributing factors to my depressive state. Past traumas that I could never overcome is just an instance. I have those episodes of mild to moderate anxiety, sometimes social, and those repulsive strikes of hypersexuality. I think I should retain the course of medication, but I'm considering psychotherapy to aid the process of recovery.

    How about Norepinephrine-Dopamine Reuptake Inhibitors (NDRIs)? They are used to treat smoke addiction, can this possibly be helpful for PMO abstinence as well?
    I've been taking escitalopram for over a month now, in combination with Depakene (for stabilizing minor maniac swings) and Mirtazapine (Remeron) for sleeplessness.
    PS: I've been taking L-Tyrosine as a separate food supplement for my diet: it's a precursor for dopamine, norepinephrine and epinephrine hormones.

    Good luck, brother! Hopefully in your case depression is just a symptom. Do you play sports - jogging, fitness or anything?

    I don't understand that much about meds that I could give a valuable advice here, but personally I don't see much difference between my past depression episodes when I used PMO and the current one when I'm abstained from PMO, maybe except I feel more anxiety now and this is new for me. I also used porn and edging for self-medication to ease the depression symptoms and now I can't do this. I still don't know if my depression is the consequence of PMO and how PMO abstinence affects it, it will probably take a few years to get answer to this if ever, but I think it's more related with my inability to deal with stress, inner insecurity or constant negative thinking than PMO. However abstaining from PMO naturally reduces stress and insecurity (even it might look opposite at first as many here are using PMO for stress relief, but it's a bad practice), so I hope PMO abstinence will work positively here.
