Replacing PMO with StarCraft2

This is my third attempt at a 90-day reboot. I relapsed after 18 days, and 36 days.

Using StarCraft-2 to overcome PMO, and get better at life in 90-days.

Every relapse is different and requires different strategies. That's exactly what my new reboot is all about. Strategy.

I'm going to give up PMO for 90 days and use StarCraft-2 as a variable in determining my progress.

I'm not just doing this to have fun and play a game to relax or escape my troubles. I'm going to attempt to learn the game and improve my skill level over it, and develop a better understanding of how it's played. To develop habits that I can transfer over to other areas of my life and help me become a better person. Think of it like someone getting better at chess, or pool, and how much time and effort they really have to put in to it to be good. Sure there are naturally talented players, but as an average Joe, you have to do the work. There's a reason why it's called Star"Craft" because it is just that. It's a craft and a skill game. A real time strategy. Arguably the best RTS ever made.

Now I know I can't just lock myself in my room and play StarCraft-2, nor would I want to. So I will have to go outside, weather permitted, (I say that because it's basically flooding outside right now, and I don't drive.) and do something social/non-introverted. Such as going to a coffee shop to read, or riding my bike, gym etc. at least once a week. Going to work doesn't count, although I get to be somewhat social there.

There are several ranks in the ladder system. Right now I am "Gold" which is about the third tier. It goes: Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Masters. My goal is to reach the Masters league in 90 days. Now how does one go from third level "Gold", to sixth level "Masters", in 90-days? I have no fucking idea. I know that porn isn't going to help me get there.

StarCraft will be a 90-day metaphor for life. I've been playing this game, for fun, and somewhat as a hobby for over 10+ years. I played the original and now the second one. I'm not that great of a player. I do a lot of random strategies and I don't take it too seriously. That's about to change. I'm going to use this as a metaphor for life. If I can succeed in StarCraft, I can succeed at anything I put the time in to. I know that for a fact. StarCraft is a fucking hard game. At least, I perceive it to be. To get good at it, you have to put in the time and really understand what's going on. Maybe if I learn a few new things it won't be hard anymore, who knows?

I'm going to give it 100% for the next 90 days and see how far I can get. I do have 30+ hour a week job that will be taking up some of my time but I plan on spending at least 6+ hours learning and playing this beautiful game, everyday.

To put things in to a little perspective I actually spent $2,000 on a brand new computer and desk to play StarCraft-2. I haven't been playing it much, maybe once or twice a month. So I'm really bad at this game right now. All of my experience means jack shit. I have no idea what the current meta-game is, or what the hell I'm doing. This is going to be a shit show for sure.

What I'll be doing to get better at StarCraft 2:

    1) I'm going to practice one new build order every morning from 5:30am to 6:30am per week.
    2) I'm going to review replays of games I've played from 6:30am to 7:00am.
    3) When I have a window of time (after work, or before work) I'm going to practice that build order in real time against opponents in ranked games, over and over, for four hours straight.
    4) I'm going to spend two hours studying/posting about strategy on a StarCraft-2 forum.
    5) I'm going to spend at least one hour watching strategy videos on YouTube.
    6) I'm to spend 30 minutes after I'm done doing all this to meditate, hopefully about StarCraft.

    Now only one question remains...

Which race do I play?

Lol! I totally understand your thinking! Although I know nothing about starcraft2 I could say that your strategy is amazing. It's better to fill your free time with good things instead of PMO. I'm doing the same except I wanna hit level 30 in destiny.:D

I like the fact about you getting more into a hobby to distract yourself from PMO. You can do this, man. You have it, and I'm on that same boat. I just restarted today after a 22 day streak. Find anything to take your mind off of it. Don't forget to meet some new girls as well though. You might find someone you really like. This is what I'm going to do, and I think I'll pick up skateboarding again to also get me out of my house. Fully getting back into it will help tremendously. Good luck.

    Day 0

I have about two hours left in my day. I've played about five games maybe. Each game is an average of 20 minutes. So in four hours I can expect to be playing around 12 games a day.

I'm going to take a cold shower and then sign up for a SC-2 forum. Don't worry, I'll still be posting here once a day to keep this journal updated on my progress and also if I have any "eureka!" moments. I'm sure I will.

After I browse around the forum for a bit I'm going to attempt to make a YouTube playlist with StarCraft strategy videos. I need about 7 hours of videos for the first seven days. I'll add more when I get closer to watching all of them.

I'll finish off my night with 15-30 minutes of meditation and then go to sleep. Oh, I need to pick a build order to practice tomorrow morning as well. And a race. Hmm... there are three races, Terran, Zerg, and Protoss. If I'm going to be spending 90-days playing one race, I better fucking be happy with my decision.

My best race is Zerg. I have the most instincts and intuition playing with them. The most experience as well. I think that's my best chance at reaching master league. Maybe I can practice and learn a different race after these 90-days if I find learning StarCraft-2 to be a rewarding experience. I'm not exactly improving my life, or anyone else's by getting good at a video game - or am I?

    Zerg it is.

This is really solid advice. I definitely am going to get in to "pick-up" and approaching girls at some point. Just not sure when. I've been doing it a little bit and it's been a really fun way to be social. Right now I have so many addiction issues overwhelming my life that I feel I need to be introverted and focus on rebooting at this time.

After 90-days I will definitely be pursuing other goals and relationships are a high priority on that list as well. I actually went 36 days my last time around and I was approaching a lot of girls. I met a really nice one that I'm still kind of talking to, and I saw her yesterday actually.

I'm not sure if that will develop in to anything, but if it does that would be awesome and if not there's plenty of fish in the sea. I'm sure we will remain friends over the next 90 days though. She said she's going to have more time coming up when school is done so I can definitely sacrifice a day or two to hang out with her when she wants and I don't mind doing that at all.

However, when she's not able to hang out I can fall back on SC-2.

    Thank you for posting.

I changed my avatar to a picture of a marine standing under an ultralisk. An ultralisk is one of the strongest zerg units. They're really massive. Marines are light infantry units that are so weak that it takes a lot of them to take down one ultralisk. Sometimes I feel like that marine when it comes to fighting against PMO.

In 90-days I hope that PMO will feel like that marine.

Ironically my name on StarCraft is also my name on NoFap. If anyone else plays StarCraft 2 and would like to play a few games sometime, let me know.

We can get through this. We gotta stay strong and do whatever it takes. I need to meet some new girl, begin skateboarding again, and I need a new game to play. I just gave up on Pokemon.

Good work on making a pointed effort at habit replacement. While people keep bashing computer games for shorter attention spans and missing out on real world action, they can help you develop all sorts of real world skills too.

Whether StarCraft 2 satisfies all the requirements of a game that really helps you develop your mind, for sure it's a great step to replace PMO with it!

Oh yeah! I totally second this. Thanks for reminding me of this VM!

Ohhhhh man I'm nerding out on this thread. I just installed Heart of the Swarm on my PC. Hadn't played it for awhile but I'm getting back into it. Let's play man! My username is "EeTeeThree".

As far as the races go, I like zerg the best too, but I can play all three OK. One interesting strategy is choosing random, so for the first couple of minutes they don't know what you're playing. Plus playing all of them helps to understand your enemy too. Though I guess if you're just trying to rank up playing just zerg would be good.

Alright, it's still day zero so I'm not that upset that I slept in today. Tomorrow I will have to really start following through with my goals. I'm going to pick a few build orders to practice before I have to go to work. One for each match up.

@MelancholyWeightlifter My battle.net tag is VanillaMochi#1976, My Character name is VanillaMochi and my Character code is 748. I would need your character code to add you. (You can view it by going to "Add friend - Add Character" and it should tell you what your CC is. Feel free to add me if you'd like. It would be nice to have someone to practice builds with.

@anthrope I think StarCraft is a really unique game and can teach you a lot about yourself. It definitely helps develop your brain for sure. I don't view it as a complete waste of time, although I know there are other things I could be doing instead.

    @eldish Thank you brother.

    @Move_along Stay strong!

I have my reasons for wanting to study/play this game for 90-days. The application will transfer over to real world situations very soon. I'm only developing the habits I need through learning and playing StarCraft-2. I agree with you that they can be addictive and a waste of time. I'm changing my habit wheel so to speak.

StarCraft-2 will be the catalyst to help me overcome my addictions for the next 90-days.

I've never played any of the StarCraft titles but as a fellow gamer I fully support your effort and wish you best of luck. Mastering a game, especially a quick-paced competitive RTS should give you lots and lots of satisfaction. It's just as worth mastering as any other hobby and I dare say that it's harder than many (I was never any good at RTS, I'm more of a turn-based or active pause strategy type of guy :)).
