Can it be done?

Is it possible to completely break out of this addiction and be like we were pre-addiction? Or will we always be addicts, just in control of our addiction and triggers, but essentially could relapse if our determination, resolve and awareness decreases even one iota?

Good question. Maybe some long term PMO-free people will offer some insight.

I imagine that the memories of PMO will always be there, not every day, but within reach in times of stress, boredom or with certain triggers. So we will have to remain vigilant and keep reminding ourselves why we left that life behind.

Overcoming this addiction is a huge change in our lives though. You end up improving or letting go of many things in your life. Such is the impact that PMO had in masking other problems.

So really, coming out of this months or years down the track, temptations could be like water off a ducks back.

  3. I can tell you it is possible certainly to stay away from porn, i've not viewed any porn in over 3 years. Everyone has their own personal reasons why they want to stop for good, if you are honest with yourself and you really truly want to not have to worry about porn ever again then you can do it with the right support.

  4. I've only had quite short streaks but i think it is possible to get pretty close to that pre-porn point. Of course there is a habit imprinted on your brain which will likely have some impact on you, but not much. My current streak has been rather easy; i have had the urges, but i have been able to quite effortlessly let them go. I sure hope i can keep it this way.

I've also quited smoking after 5 years of doing it, and have been without for 3 years if i remember correctly (Well okay, i smoked the last time i was drinking a few months back). There are rarely these moments when i think i could smoke a cigarette. It's not necessary even an urge, more like a thought. So yes, i believe that the addiction remains in some sense for a long time, perhaps forever, but it is not a constant fighting and wrestling with it. Even though i smoked a few cigarettes when i was drunk, it took me maybe a week to get back to the point where i had no urges to smoke again. If you have no means to cope with stress, then relapse can be possible even after a longer break, i'd think. Or when you are in poor condition for decision making, like drunk or hungover. In the end, i think it is pretty much about how clear your reasons for quitting are, and how well you can handle problems.

I definitely appreciate the changes that occurs, although I think that the actual type of change depends upon the rehabilitation process. From what i've read, most of the benefits or healing that people have received are not directly caused by the breaking of the addiction but by the actions required in order to distract from the addiction and then breaks that addiction because of being otherwise busy with beneficial practices.

Let's hope so mate. I guess for all our sakes.

Good on ya and congratulations. But I've seen so many people here talking about the long streaks that they've had but their counters are low. They talk about stupid things that make them reset or relapse even after so much time. What I don't understand is the aversion to internet filters.

Habits can be broken completely. They are merely routine cycles of repeat behaviour, this is more than that. It's a neurochemical affliction that changes our brain chemistry slightly to create a need.

Congratulations on that, quite an accomplishment. I do not mean to belittle the accomplishment, I think it is very difficult. I would like to point a slight difference. The drive that fuels PMO or at least is the initial trigger is ingrained into our dna and survival mechanisms. You can't fight the desire for sex and the initial triggers are sourced from there.

  6. I know it is a different sort of addiction, but for me there has been a lot of similarities to PMO. The pattern for addictions seems to be somewhat similiar. I just used it as an anecdote to explain in what way the addiction can affect years later.

That could be. The brain stores many unused pathways for long period of times, if they have been repeated and learned well enough. But the brain also has capacity to dissolve some neural connections in certain situations. I assume that if someone has done PMO for, say 10 years, they will likely have a trace of that behaviour for longer. Unless maybe if they have delved deep into the core issues of the addiction and dealt with it properly, and thus rewired their brain.

I guess that would be only true way to break it. a 2 step process: (1) behavioural and (2)acknowledgement of the underlying issue and treating it.

Will it all be OK that after years of masturbation if we have stopped the addiction part we will be able to be healthy? Any internal issues?

that is a difficult one. I am also in digital marketing. Why don't you start a new thread and ask people?
Will power, motivation and a reason why is key. An accountability partner is incredibly useful. Writing to people. talk about it, I found that helpful. Try figure out your triggers and when it is most likely to occur, then plan for it and do other things instead. I started Tai-Chai something called the 8 Bricades which I found useful, exercise is good. Staying out of the house in general if you don't need to be there

Sounds like you could benefit from making a busier schedule.

If weekends are a problem, fill them with a good mix of things to do! Social, events, exercise, hobbies, a bit of work or study, cooking, reading... And if you're tired - take a break and rest.

This is how I treat every day at the moment and it's working better than my previous attempts. I could pmo tonight, but tomorrow I have this and that to do and need the energy... so I can't afford to pmo.
