I've read this article and I've been shocked how well it diagnose me. I've developed problems with binge MB in my early teenage years before encountering TV porn (web porn was only starting in the days of dial up modems). Porn worsened my compulsive behavior problem, but it didn't create it. Article basically says that porn is just additional stimulus to get us high and numb via binge MB, nothing more. Shit hits the fan big time once removed not only because of chronical withdrawal symptoms (sudden deficiency of acetylcholine, dopamine and serotonin), but also because psych issues (fear, anxiety, pain...) we were trying to escape from resurface during self enforces celibacy and hit us with vengeance. I'm in hard reboot for the fourth time now (only counting reboots lasting more than 3 months and the current attempt) and every single time I've tried to MB without P after reboot I was immediately teleported back into rabbit hole of binge MB and binge PMO soon after. That's why I concluded I simply have to give up on trying to establish healthy MB pattern and give up MB. Is giving up MB for life even possible or am I delusional trying to sustain MB celibacy? Does anyone have similar observations, binge MB being even bigger problem than porn?

"...binge masturbator is likely to be acting in relationship to specific stimuli that they are unable to tolerate. Likely responding to some strong internal, intolerable affect combined with an identifiable trigger or stimulus, this type of compulsive masturbator can lose hours or even days to the computer, videos, with or without drug use and masturbation. They can literally lock themselves up at home, or in motel rooms and disappear into their masturbatory escape.
    ...
Of particular interest in examining this form of self-harm behavior is to looking at the associated neuropathways. The arousal neuropathway is about pleasure and intensity. One of the most common methods of stimulating arousal pathways are high-risk sex, which masturbating to the point of injury would be included in. The numbing neuropathway produces a calming, relaxing, soothing, or sedative process. Masturbation creates an analgesic experience in the brain."

Brain chemistry and side effects behind frequent MB:

"Frequent masturbation and ejaculation stimulate acetylcholine/parasympathetic nervous functions excessively, resulting in the over production of sex hormones and neurotransmitters such as acetylcholine, dopamine and serotonin. Abundant and unusually amount of these hormones and neurotransmitters can cause the brain and adrenal glands to perform excessive dopamine-norepinephrine-epinephrine conversion and turn the brain and body functions to be extremely sympathetic. In other words, there is a big change of body chemistry when a client compulsively masturbates.

For the client engaging in compulsive masturbation, they often experience problems with concentration and memory. This is a dangerous side effect of compulsive masturbation and signals that the brain is being over drained of acetylcholine. This behavior can also drain the motor nerves, neuro-muscular endings, and tissues of acetylcholine and replace it with too much stress adrenalin which is where memory loss, lack of concentration, and eye floaters come from. To fight these symptoms, the chemical levels in their body needs to be balanced."

    Treatment:

1st step: celibacy -> to allow fear, anxiety, pain to resurface
2nd step: therapy to address underlying issues

Of course giving up masturbation for life is possible. You don't need masturbation. Getting sexual relief is important and it should happen through sex. Though not everyone is able to have sex for whatever reason. For those people, masturbation might have to be their way of getting that relief. But if you are able to have sex, why would you masturbate? You don't need to be in a position where you can have sex right away, but in some time in the future. I also don't believe in life long abstaining and semen retention. Getting sexual relief might not be necessary, but it is beneficial and healthy.

And to answer your question, bingeing can be worse than just regular use. There is a page on yourbrainonporn.com where it is talked about.
    Here: https://www.yourbrainonporn.com/reb...ong-abstinence-with-binges-an-addiction-risk/

Here's some of the key points mentioned there:
"Intermittent bingeing can do the same thing as continuous use, and in some cases do more."

"Intermittent consumption (especially in the form of a binge) can also produce severe withdrawal symptoms, such as lethargy, depression and cravings. In other words, when someone uses after an interim of abstinence, and binges, it can hit the user harder – perhaps because of the heightened intensity of the experience."

"Even more remarkable is that periods of abstinence (2-4 weeks) lead to neuroplastic changes that don’t occur in a user that doesn’t take such long breaks. These alterations in the brain increase cravings to use in response to triggers. Furthermore, the stress system changes such that even minor stress can cause cause cravings to use."

The page is about porn addiction, your problem is regarding MB but I think the effect bingeing has is the same.

Thanks for very comprehensive answer. I also don't believe in life long semen retention, but I have a problem from a practical stance. Being single without any partner on horizon and not being able to MB without risking full blown binge MB relapse leaves one with very limited number of options.

I'd be interesting to know how many people here has problem with binge MB. I believed that most of us are in this group and that compulsive MB component is the main problem in PMO, P being just our tool to prolong MB, but now I think this may not be true.

Masturbation is the underlying problem, porn just makes masturbation possible, especially binge masturbation. You could not achieve hours of binging or multiple ejaculations per day without external stimuli (that's why i'm classifying everything that produces solo arousal as porn - erotic texts can be porn, audio can be porn and so on).

So first of all, you have to tackle this as a masturbation problem, not only as a porn problem. And yes, therapy will help immensely, just make sure you don't get a "sex positive" therapist that tells you masturbation is "normal and healthy"

The text is correct, withdrawals can be brutal, especially if binging was involved.

I wrote a post a while ago on binging and how people incorrectly interpret binging only 'multiple times per day'. But binging is also prolonged stimulation. If you only masturbate once and ejaculate once in a week but do so in a session lasting hours and/or with dozens of clips/pics, it's still binging.

Not that masturbation is good or healthy, cause it's not, but there's degrees to it. Any masturbation lasting longer than 10-20 minutes should be considered a binge. Even if you masturbate for 5 minutes but manage to go through 10 videos or 50 gifs, it should be considered a binge as well.

  6. This article raised my awareness. I don't escalate very much when I masturbate "solo". Not as much as when I use porn or subs at least. But recently I used p-stories instead of videos. It seems to be a step forward, on the other hand, I can binge to this too. The stimuli and how it works plays in important role, I'm sure of that (for example the operators of p-tube-sites are observing and manipulating my behaviour as a consumer on their platform). BUT whatever the stimuli, it's always about fantasy. The main part takes place in the brain where fantasies and emotions are working together with the brainchemicals like dopamin.

Exactly, I keep saying this... porn is not really the problem, FANTASY is. Porn just helps you fantasize/dissociate better than other stimuli or no stimuli at all. You can use erotic stories, erotic sounds, instagram models, facebook friends, the woman that sold you something a few hours ago or anything else. All those and any combination of them will fuel your fantasy. An erotic story and a picture is usually stronger than an erotic story alone or a picture alone, a gif is usually stronger than a picture, a porn vid is usually stronger than a story or a picture and so on. In some cases your mind, if "trained", can create more vivid or intricate or interactive scenarios than an interactive porn.

So the problem is sexual fantasy (and consequent masturbation).
