Porn has been compared with being as addictive as cocaine and heroin.

That is because of “The Coolidge Effect”.

The male brain is wired to release dopamine for sexual novelties, this because nature wants to make sure we reproduce as a species.

So seeing a “new” female will spike the excitement.

It’s scientifically called the Coolidge effect The problem comes when this can happen just with a click of a mouse, then men overstimulate the “reward circuit” which controls major functions such as hormones, erection, organs, stress level and so on.

The Reward Circuit is an old program for survival; seeking pleasure and avoiding pain. Boys start to watch porn around 11-12 years old today on their smartphones.

And more and more young men suffer from erection dysfunction, low libido, brain fog, and decreased concentration, and lack of motivation, no willpower.

And this already in their teens.

So most porn addicts first of all don’t even know they have an addiction.

And what they do is conditioning their sexuality with; desensitization, numbed pleasure, and a need for a higher and higher stimulant to get a buzz.

And it literally rewires the neuron-pathways in the brain.

I would say it’s even more addictive than other drugs since other drugs can “finish” and be done with.

Porn is always there and when it’s not it stays in your brain as memory and you can always relive those memories again and again.

Dopamine on constant high reduces the receptors in the brain, leading to less excitement.

And porn addicts prefer porn over real-life partners because of that.

Or don’t feel as aroused when it’s not a porn star in a hardcore scene.

Multiple tabs switching between different videos to get the best kick.

Level of tolerance has been built up. It’s possible to reprogram your brain back to normal again, but those pathways created will always remain there, weaker but latent, just like any drug do to your brain.

It’s actually a serious issue that is inherent in our very natural instincts.

No wonder boys and men have a hard time with it.

Also considering that porn is everywhere online today.

A topic that needs to be addressed more often, and actually have some compassion for these young boys and men who get addicted. Its’ real.

An addiction which is believed to be among a very high percentage (~33%) of men today.

    What're your thoughts on this?

You might have conditioned your brain to function a certain way. But with de-conditioning and re-wiring of the pathways, you can change your program. But it takes dedication and hard work.

I imagined that I could write a virus, and send it to the world. A virus that deletes Porn on every Server. A world without porn. That would be great.

  7. If porn was, as addictive as cocaine, porn distribution would carry jail time and we as species are doomed to die, because everyone will be addicted and society would not function.
In reality addictive quality of porn is at best about the same as your favorite television show.
We have far more addictive activities like eating or should I say "consuming garbage instead of food", and those have majority of the population actually hooked and are demolishing human health on massive scale.
Unhealthy individuals aside from being unhealthy, do not have normal brain function, or motivation, so they cant learn, cant plan, cant focus and are constantly depressed. Making them prone to exploit addictive behaviors

Number of porn addicts compared to entire population is very very very tiny. People become addicted to porn due health or psychological challenges, like depression, isolation etc.

  8. I believe that number is bound to rise since more and more teenagers are getting hooked on to it because of technology.

  11. I think that it is a correlation not causation, it is not that younger generation sees porn and instantly becomes hooked, addicted and cant stop.

Its more of younger generation gets poor physical and mental health that in tern makes them more likely to seek porn and other addictive behaviors.

Remember that people watch porn to feel good, or to feel better. That implies they do not feel good to begin with, and seek pornography, or alcohol or drugs as a way to feel better.

Cause is poor health, which means poor brain function, poor judgement, poor decisions.

Why are we only looking at increase in porn use alone? Why not look at increase in heart disease, cancer, brain disorders, increase in rate depression, obesity? What about increase in alcohol and drug addiction? Public health is poor and sick people do what they can to cope.
Increase in pornography addiction numbers is a symptom, not the cause and correlates clearly with decline of health, and health is not how you feel, poor health is poor ability to think.

  12. This is great video, and they clearly say that when you loose normal functioning in prefrontal cortex you do not make good decisions. You can see it as chicken and egg problem - "do you loose healthy brain function and then make bad decisions like abuse porn" or " does porn cause you ro loose normal brain function and then you keep making bad decisions" In case of pornography those two work together, first you loose good brain function due to poor health and that makes addictive behaviors, like porn, drug or alcohol abuse more likely.

The reason pornography is not widely accepted as being addictive is because healthy individuals do not get addicted to porn by just mere exposure. Which means they are able to consistently resist executive function suppression.
Addictive substances like cocaine will chemically suppress executive function and healthy people will still get addicted.

Unhealthy lifestyle which majority of Americans follow compromises normal brain function, making people more likely to becoming addicted.

Thanks a lot for the post. I think this is really important to consider. Only since about 3 or 4 years I am actually aware of porn being an addiction. I think there needs to be much more awareness raised, especially for younger kids. Unfortunately, porn is considered to be okay by society at large. Its dangers are never really made clear. What the consequences are we all here very well know. I guess most of us would have wished that someone had told us about the effects a long time ago. Just as they do with drugs, alcohol, smoking, etc.

Great courage to admit this on a public forum. That is one method to make it have less grip over you! Keep going. Keep getting accountability partners to support you!

To the guy that made the big confession.

Get rid of that addiction at all costs. I don’t care if you have to smash every device you own.

I heard of someone committed suicide rather than live with the stigma of watching that.

Do you want to be thought of in the same vein as Gary Glitter?

Maybe the dissenting opinion has some merit. Maybe it is only sad, pathetic losers that have no passion for life or are unable to flirt with women that are prone to this addiction.

All the more reason to quit
