James Montgomery Boice. Died in 1980. His messages can still be found online. His books also.

He handled the Word of God very well and had messages with solid observations, interpretations, and applications.

He also wrote several commentaries on books on the Bible which also contained solid observations, interpretations, and applications. These books are multi-volume exhaustive commentaries. I’ve read several of them and still have them on my book shelves.

I remember listening to his radio sermons while tucked in bed back in the ‘70’s early on Sunday mornings before my dad would get us all up to get ready for church.

    ——-

Now here I am a back slidden sinner with no intention of ever returning to church, spending more n more time with an atheist woman who I’m falling in love with, and avoiding old Christian companions like the plague.

How did I get here??? But I digress from the forum’s topic.

    ——-

I also liked Charles Stanley. I used to listen to him a lot. I think he’s still alive and preaching.

Ravi Zacharias (Let My People Think) and Alistair Begg (Truth For Life) are probably the two I listen to the most.

Judah Smith, however, might be the most effective Bible communicator that I'm aware of. Watch this and try your best not to break down in tears.

Yeah, I was surprised to see your comment but you shouldn't call yourself back slidden. That's what narrowminded Christian call you. You are not a backslider, you are on your own spiritual walk that is different to some Christians.

He is. His son, Andy is also a pastor and quite a controversial one among some Christians. I like Andy and sometimes listen to his podcast. He's intelligent and is very down to earth. I don't always agree with him but I respect his point of view.

Here's an interview with him where he talks about his relationship with his father and the controversies:

    I also like:

J.S. Park - Appreciate how honest he is about his doubts, porn addiction and depression. His book on depression helped me understand depression and made me realise I didn't know anything about it.

Rob Bell - He caused me to view the Bible differently. May have become an atheist if I hadn't heard him.

Rachel Held Evans - It was so sad when she died. I actually bought her book about three days before her death and haven't been able to finish it because I feel sad when I pick it up. She was another one who helped me keep some sort of faith, I loved her intelligent approach to scripture and how she wasn't afraid to wrestle with the Bible.

Pete Ennis - Love his commentary on Ecclesiastes, it made me see it differently. He isn't one of those preachers who's in denial of the contradictions in the Bible, he just accepts it and works with it.

Tim Ridder - Interesting that Francis Chan was mentioned because he studied under Francis Chan and so did his friend Nate Hanson and together they present and produce the Almost Heretical podcast. Tim was the first person to show the idea of there being more than one God... Almost every podcast they do causes me to see the Bible and Christianity differently.

Tim Mackie - He's another that speaks about the Bible talking about there being more than one God, not as liberal as Tim Ridder but still isn't afraid to go there. Truly enthusiastic about scripture and that enthusiastic rubs off on his listeners. Another thing that's great is how he talks about how we should treat the Bible like we're tourists visiting a foreign country because that's we are like when we read it.

Richard Rohr - Listening to him is so comforting, he has great wisdom and again causes me to think about things differently. Not sure about Christian mythicism but I've time for Richard Rohr and his book is on my to-read list.

If you like these guys ^^^^ ...

... you probably won't like these guys ^^^^. No offense to @King Og of Bashan , but a lot of the guys in that list are teaching stuff that's flat-out unbiblical. I mean, "more than one god?" Hello, Christianity isn't a polytheistic faith.

In fact, John Piper got a ton of attention when he tweeted "Farewell, Rob Bell" after seeing Bell's promotional video for one of his books.

Yeah I know! Back then I was in a agreement with John Piper... Back then I thought Rob Bell was a heretic but now I don't. Interestingly Rob Bell was interviewed on Almost Heretical, they asked him about the tweet and he was confuse as to what John Piper was farewelling him from.

You know I was hoping someone wouldn't respond like this but I'm not surprised one bit. I could have said negative stuff about some of the other preachers mentioned in this thread but I chose not to since this thread is not a thread about what preacher you disagree with. All I'm going to say is Google some of these preachers and you'll find some pretty disturbing stuff about some of them.

As for it being 'unbiblical'... IMO that's just an evangelical code word for someone who interprets the Bible differently to them. Everything is unbiblical and nothing is unbiblical.

The Bible never really claims there to be one God (especially in the OT but even some verses in NT references there more than one God). I explained all this in another thread. If there is only one God then the second ten commandment is one of nonsensical laws ever written.

Thanks, I hope you will. Some might challenge you but there's nothing wrong with a challenge.

I will admit some of them are slightly liberal but you might learn some things. J.S. Park and Tim Mackie are probably the more conservative of the ones mentioned.

J.S. wrote a book on how he overcame his porn addiction in his book Cutting It Off which you might find helpful and the book about depression is called How Hard It Really Is. As Tim Mackie he started The Bible Project podcast and also have videos on YouTube. The YouTube videos aren't as in depth as the podcast so I'd say the podcast is better. In the God series where they talked about there being other Gods they decided to not go in so depth because it might have been too controversial for YouTube. You listen to it here and the YouTube version is below.

There's only one LORD, one "Big-G" God.

I'm assuming you mean the first commandment is nonsensical, since God says "you shall have no other gods before me." But small-g gods aren't gods at all. What God is clearly saying is that the Israelites (and us) were to put nothing ahead of God in our priorities. Just because people worship an idol, it doesn't mean the god of that idol actually exists. The point was that the worship of an idol was offensive to God. And this doesn't just have to do with literal pagan gods or the gods of other religions--scripture is also clear that we shouldn't make money our god. There are people in the world who clearly worship wealth--but that doesn't mean there's a "money god".

I would suggest that the reason you (and many others) like people like Rob Bell, Rachel Held Evans, and the "Almost Heretical" podcast (which, the title alone should give any Christian a moment to pause and reflect) is because it waters down the more difficult aspects of biblical truth so it's more palatable to the modern western mind--and in particular, the modern western liberal mind. They makes scripture more comfortable, and make it feel more inclusive, and presumably more loving. But it's false teaching, and I worry about those who are deceived by it. Jesus was unequivocally exclusive--there is no other way to the Father except through him. There aren't "many Fathers." There's only one.

  17. I like the pastors at my church :p lol but I also listen to Mike Winger sometimes on YouTube, and he's pretty cool.
