Do you guys feel like we can cure our addiction to porn by ourselves?

This guy on youtube that I'm watching (j.k emezi at pornreboot) basically says that it is near to impossible to break this cycle by ourselves. Do you guys think this is true? Do you personally know anyone that's beaten it without the help of a mentor for over a year or two?

Unfortunately the recovery rate for this addiction is only 5%. WOW! When I read that I was blown away. I mean, it’s always possible, but I think it would be highly unusual.

Also, why would you want to do this alone? So many people willing to help....

  6. With willpower and discipline you can beat literally anything by yourself. Its good to have good influences but not vital. If you need true help, seek jesus.

It's doable but you need to educate yourself on the topic of addiction. Knowledge is power. Fighting addiction is a long battle so you better know your enemy. I've used this forum and these two mentor channels to help me break out of 25 years long addiction cycle. Maybe you'll find them useful too:

    Thanks for the invite @Alex1111

I'm not sure about "a mentor", but ...

I found this site to be the key. I tried giving up porn in my own, starting in late 2010, but just couldn't do it. I did have some long streaks—I often reached weeks or even months and once made it to 22 months—but after each I would crash back into frequent long porn sessions. By 2016 I was desperate, and then I found these forums and I haven't relapsed since. That makes it sound easy, and of course it hasn't been, but the support, advice, challenge, and shared commitment I've found here has been the bedrock of my current porn sobriety (I'm on Day 1,116)

If you mean by yourself in real life, yeah. My family/ friends have no idea of my addiction and I'm beating it alone. But if you mean virtually, there is no way I could beat it alone. Randomly found NoFap in April and I've pretty much wasted 2019 with brain fog and depression, but it'll be worth it in the end.

    Hi,

Can you please confirm where you get 5% from? I've heard the same percentage used in relation to alcohol recovery

    Thanks

You can do it alone but it's very intense and hard.
    To say the least.

all you have to do is look at the relapse and resets by people and you can see that a very small percentage are really getting into long term recovery. On all forums it’s the same, relapse after relapse. It’s so incredibly sad because these are the people trying their hardest! They really want to stop, imagine the number who have just given up.

You bet it is! It sounds way too pessimistic to me. None of the screenshots actually cite or reference a study to show where that 5% number comes from.

But when people stop posting we do not know how their sobriety is going. My guess (and it is a guess) is that most people who recover stop posting here, so we have absolutely no way to ascertain the percentage without sampling ex-members, and I do not think anyone has done that.

Personally I think this site is at its best when we support and encourage each other (and challenge each other, that's important too). I would need to see real evidence (i.e. study results) before telling people that there was only a 5% chance of them quitting porn, I believe that if you are genuine about your commitment, and willing to open up honestly here, then we can really help. I am 1,116 days free of porn and that has only been possible because of the support and encouragement I have found here.

That’s so awesome about your success! I hope my husband fairs as well. From what I understand most addictions have the same rate if success as people with long term illnesses and managing those. Diabetics etc. now those rates hover at around 50%. I’ve not been able to find anything other than 5% for sex/porn addiction. Heck some people don’t even think it’s that high, lol. But a lot of other factors come in... ie most ( 83%) have more than one addiction. Given that, if you are also a drug addict/alcoholic then the relapse rate would be higher I’d think? I’m not trying to discourage anyone! But I also don’t want to bury my head in the sand. I’d love to find more research that proves the 5% wrong!! I just haven’t been able to.

    Really? What's your longest streak?

  18. I am over 500+++ days. :) No idea about the exact number. It's my present streak too.

That's awesome bro. Any advice? I've been trying to quit for 2-3 years and my longest stretch was 22 days

Please know that I would love to find hard evidence that the 5% is not true. However how many guys hit 300+ days then u don’t hear from them for 3 years and lo and behold they relapsed and are back? Just playing devils advocate! My csat counselor says absolutely the 5% isn’t true, she thinks it’s closer to 50%. She also says that unlike alcoholics, once a sex/porn addict gets into real recovery they don’t keep going back, once free they are free. I think, Hope? That with help anyone can beat this. Sometimes just knowledge about how to conquer it is all you need, and for too long this has not been acknowledged as a problem.
