First off I wanted to say I wasn’t completely sure which forum this was appropriate for, so if this isn’t it let me know.

I’m in a long-term relationship, however I feel I’ve recently come to realize my porn/masturbation addiction stemming back to middle school and the negatives. I’m motivated to start my first real attempt at nofap, but one thing I haven’t found a super clear answer on is the effect of sex during. I don’t anticipate completely stopping having sex with my partner, but will that negatively affect my progress and benefits as I attempt to proceed with nofap?

I always recommend that it doesn't, here we support real sex and not virtual/artificial sex. The idea is to weakens the porn pathways and reinforce the pathways to real sex in your brain. So for me the best way to recover is to stop porn and have real sex with someone you care about and not use just as a porn replacement.

It will slow your progress and make staying clean harder. That being said, most couples try to reboot while still having sex. We did, but it definitely made staying clean harder, ironically. So after 4-6 months ( somewhere in that time frame) we switched to hard mode because my husband was still really struggling after sex. The 90 days no sex really helped, now we only made it 52 days ( because of me!) had sex then another 50. I equate it this way, early in recovery when you take away pmo the only access to orgasm/sex is actual sex. So if you were an alcoholic and you stopped drinking hard liquor but once a week had a shot of light beer, it lights up the dopamine in a different pathway but close enough in your brain to connect with the pmo pathway. If that makes sense? So different, but too close in early recovery. At some point it won’t do that, or shouldn’t, but early on it will. What are you doing to get into recovery? It’s not just about stopping pmo.
