Disclaimer: this is my own theory, based on my journey and things that I have read.

There is a common pattern among testimonials on nofap.com: men that have checked themselves with a physician and have normal results in analysis of blood, heart, digestive system, etc. but still suffer unbearable anxiety and insomnia among others (these are the most common).

I don't think this has to do with the dopaminergic system.

Indulging with PMO for hours is so incredibly pleasant that everything else becomes annoying and uninteresting, even irritating. With time, our system adapts to that, gets used to the pleasant state --and wants more. Then what was the normal state turns into something unacceptable and disappointing --"disappointment" is synonymous with anxiety in the Thesaurus dictionary. Our body interprets what used to be normal as a threat, and hence activates the fight or flight mechanism, which switches off the immune system, keeps you alert (insomnia), causes you fear (anxiety and panic attacks), halts your digestive system (heartburn and nausea), etc.

Although I didn't suffer from PIED, I would apply the same logic thereto: an ordinary relation is "boring" compared to PMO. Hence you don't get aroused by normal things.

As I said, in my humble opinion this has nothing to do with dopamine. Dopamine is what makes you chase PMO, what makes you disregard other important things to attend your addiction, what makes you want to repeat and escalate more and more. In short, what makes you an addict.

P.S: striking-through some parts where I don't really know enough to draw conclusions.

With insomnia if you're fapping in your bedroom and you associate pmo with stress, you are setting yourself up for a nightmare.

I read about your association problem in the other thread and I agree: association can make it worse. I remember being terrified by my bed for a few months. I still sometimes am.

That's a pretty good and straight forward explanation. I always tried to make sense out of it and this seems to be the most plausible explanation.

I also did some research on this particular topic to understand the mechanics in what's going on in the brain and I believe it can be traced back to a desensitized levels of D2 receptors; which is a precursor of the dopaminergic system when doing PMO. Take a look at the article I sent and see what you think about it. There's lots of other resources that links D2 receptors to anxiety and insomnia, you can dig more into it if you want and see if it makes sense.

  7. That's good to hear, I'm glad your starting to recover from this.

It's a relief and encouragement for me, I've just started experiencing heart palpitations, panic attacks and bad anxiety badly so it's good to see guys recovering from this.

It amazes me how many of us have an almost identical experience in our NoFap journey and yet, whenever I bring up the notion to a Dr. of any kind that excessive PMO over the course of many years is the root cause of all of this I am completely dismissed as some moron who has no idea what he is talking about.....

Maybe I was too quick above to dismiss the dopaminergic system as the culprit for some withdrawal symptoms. I guess what I wanted to remark is that I don't see an association between the motivation to do things —I understood this was the goal of dopamine– and anxiety or insomnia. I never had motivation problems; in fact last year at the bottom of my downfall I was still supermotivated in my work and in the gym —when not plagued by withdrawal symptoms. I am going to strike through part of my original post tho.

That's an interesting article —I get lost after a while I must confess. Yeah, I also remember reading about how anxiety and insomnia produce dopamine in the brain, which could be seen as a trick that the brain plays on itself to fulfill its hunger for dopamine. And I put this answer in a few threads on the topic in nofap.com. But, altho this is a coherent explanation, it does not make so much sense after I think about it: why would the brain deliberately do this? E.g. why would your brain want dopamine if all you need is to sleep? To me, it makes more sense to think about it as a state of alert, like in the fight or flight mode, due to normal life being unbearable (hence dangerous) in comparison to the high of PMO. And I can attest this by the way I would twitch everytime I was close to fall asleep, like I was surrounded by snakes —fortunately not the case anymore.

I started having heart palpitations on September 2016 and still have them. For many months I was unable to sleep on my left side because my heart would become very agitated and would beat chaotically, which is scary as hell. Because of that I could only sleep on my right side and now my right shoulder is injured. The doctor says my heart is fine but I am still in observation and go to check myself every 4 or 6 months.

But things seem to be improving. I am able to sleep on my left side again, except for nights when the withdrawal symptoms hit back. The cardiologist prescribed me a supplement with potasium, magnesium, vitamins and Q10 which helps with heart rhythm disorders.

    THAT.

Exactly what I've had. I've been tested, and whether any docs will take you seriously purely comes down to whether you have measurable symptoms at the moment when you're tested. I was tested twice, and the second time, I did. This is a specific condition (or at least I've been diagnosed with it): https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/bundle-branch-block/symptoms-causes/syc-20370514 .

My suggestions would be to see if you can have some kind of monitor to check you continuously for several days, and put yourself through any activities (including lying on your left side, maybe MO if that's not a problem) that might provoke unusual behaviour from your heart; and if you can talk to a cardiologist, to mention the bundle branch block - it affects electrical activity in the heart.

I do think that this is part of a pathology that heavy users of PMO present with over time, that affects muscle and / or nerve tissue throughout the whole body, and which perhaps explains the wide array of symptoms that we experience; and trust me, it only gets worse unless you stop...

Yeah, in the beginning symptoms would not show when I went to the doctor. It was very frustrating.

Already did. It showed the mentioned disorders. Nothing structurally bad or worrying, the doc said.

He has already told me that this is caused by stress, an issue in my nervous system. I already removed all stress from my life but I didn't tell him this is due to PMO.

    I agree with you.

How is your heart progressing? Does it improve with abstinence?

  13. I have that same problem with my heart when sleeping, I can't sleep on my left side without my heart beating loudly and fast.

Would you reccomend seeing a doctor then? Seeing as he gave you supplements to help with your heart problems.

Yes, if you didn't see a doctor yet you should definitely do that ASAP.

Heart problems, as with all symptoms, respond to abstinence in my case. I did manage to get reasonably fit for a while. However, over the last 18 months things have gone sideways. Although my long term levels of PMO were going down, it's now obvious to me that I was doing too little, too late, and I now seem to be in a semi-permanent fatigue situation (time will tell). I just under-estimated the problem in terms of the effects on my health, and in terms of just how addicted I've been. Although I've had doubts about the cause, there's no getting away from the fact that I had one major blowout a little over a year ago, and I haven't been the same since.

However, overall it's probably a combination of age and high PMO mileage over the long-haul, finally catching up with me. My heart is generally problem free, and I'm averaging 1 PMO session every 6 weeks so far this year, but the exhaustion (sorry, "fatigue") is way worse than I've ever experienced.

  16. I used to have these back then as well. Sometimes I woke up middle of the night and saw myself floating into the ceiling or wandering in my room without noticing my body. I was so scared to go back to sleep thinking I would not wake up to see the next day. Each time that's happened, I drank some water and felt lil bit better.

Thanks God those kind of symptoms are fading but some still lingering.....

Yea man I know what you mean. I was living with the shame and guilt of using all kinds of porn for 10+ years and then I started suffering major anxiety and panic attacks, blood pressure problems, it was the worst times in my life no doubt. I know for a fact that those things are a side effect of porn, at least for me.
