    Cabo Verde!

Well my flight kept getting rescheduled, over and over, but I've finally made it. I'm very happy to be here. Beaches, warm weather, friendly people and a laid-back easy going life were what I needed. The first thing I learned is that I'd been saying it wrong. It's pronounced 'verd' as opposed to 'ver-day'. Soon after, I learned another interesting fact about its name. Less than a decade ago, there was no international consensus on the 'Cabo' part. 'Cabo', meaning 'cape' in Portuguese, was always translated into a number of languages around the world. So for example, in English the country's name was 'Cape Verde'. But then the CV government decided that they wanted standardization, so they requested the United Nations as well as individual countries around the world to change it to 'Cabo' and leave it that way. So now it's Cabo Verde everywhere, though Cape Verde is still commonly used in a casual way.

But enough about names. The country has been dubbed 'Halfrican' because the people and culture are an equal mix of African and Portuguese. The latter were the first to inhabit these islands 350 miles west of the African coastline in the Atlantic. Because of its location between mainland Africa and the Americas, it became an important stopover point for international traffic, which sadly had a lot to do with the slave trade. 80% of the population today are a Creole mix. There are only about half a million residents, but there are far more than that living abroad. The New England area of the United States alone has close to a half million people of CV descent.

I've been staying active, doing a bit of hiking along paths in the mountainous islands that remind me of the Inca Trail, as well as hiking the jet black landscapes of volcanos. I've been having a blast absorbing the beach life as well. Yesterday I was walking along a beach and saw some kids kicking around a soccer ball. One of them was missing a leg, but used his crutch so expertly that he was able to play just as well as the rest of them and it seemed almost like a leg itself.

I'm really digging this place, and looking forward to the rest of my time here.

    "Don't Go to Armenia"
I thoroughly enjoyed my exciting visit to Armenia tonight, having 80 days free of porn.
I tasted many enticing dishes made by the locals, and they were amazingly colorful and tasty.
I played sports; I had not done that in a long time. I need to get into better shape.
The weather was nice: not too hot and not cold. The scenery was incredible.
Don't go to Armenia. You might end up with too many stories when you get back.

so i went to Afghanistan, i like the fact that they only use cash, i think it's so much easier and quite convenient! (cuz it's like in my home country and i'm used to that, we share some common features when it comes to simplicity and i appreciate that very much)
i like the street food.. people dispersing around the front of the big mosque, kids playing..
twas a short but memorable visit:)

The main thing is you're still here and working on it, and you have my respect for that! The journey is going to have some downs as well as ups and there's a lot we can learn from our relapses. I know they've helped me understand the dynamics I'm dealing with. Wishing you the best!

  10. OK, I visited Azerbaijan and it's not a bad place but not my favorite. Seems like the big city Baku is trying to be like Dubai with the post-modernist high rise buildings and whatnot, which I'm not a fan of really. I had lunch at the world's largest KFC restaurant, which was not bad. (Incidentally, the first job I ever had was at KFC.) In general I just felt kind of uneasy in the country because of the geopolitical tensions and the aspirations for western-style excess.

I know, right? It's good to know these kinds of places, cuz then when you want to get away from the world, you go there.

Congratulations guys!! I'm really happy to see you all doing so well, and equally happy to see this challenge gaining momentum. Let's keep it going!

@DudeAlex, Did you happen to play any pool while you were there? Cuz you have now been awarded the Magic 8 Ball trophy! You earned it. :emoji_8ball:
@intso yep, gotta love that cash. Cha-ching! :emoji_money_with_wings: Glad you liked Afghanistan. Welcome to the main section of the Travel Board!
@artifact, great to see you here again my brother! World's largest KFC? :emoji_poultry_leg: Wow, Azerbaijan is the last place I'd expect that to be. Or one of them. My sister actually worked at KFC too when she was in high school and came home with tons of chicken left over from the buffet. We were all very sad (more like mournful) when she quit. And yes, your timing may have been off with your travel dates given the instability there at the moment. But hey, it adds to the adventure. Almost off the B's, artifact!

Good work everyone. Travel Board Updated!!

I'd like to join this challenge. I love this idea! I would like to start by depositing my current streak for a passport and the first country, Afghanistan! And I'll just continue from there every 10 days.

Edit: And after exploring Afghanistan it's a very beautiful country!

    Trip Report - Angola

As one report I watched before travelling to Angola said, with its history of civil war and illegal wildlife poaching Angola has a past that it's doing a lot to grow from. From my limited knowledge, the war was over in 2002 and huge oil reserves have been discovered and exploited since then, but the country is still very much recovering. It's a country of great disparities in income as a few have become wealthy from the oil but the economic and political infrastructure isn't there for the benefits to spread to the rest.

To make the most of my visit, after landing in the capital Luanda, I headed south with a tour group to the Lubango region and the people of Mucubal, Mutua, Mucuwana, Muila and Himba tribes, some of the oldest tribes in Africa maintaining ancient traditions. It turned out to be an extraordinary experience where most nights we camped in small communities and were able to meet the people and see first hand the local customs, food, dress and ritual.
