Why you should not start the day with youtube or some high dopamine producing activity

Discussion in 'Self Improvement' started by goodnice 2.0, May 23, 2021.

  1. You know that feeling when you start the day with youtube or netflix or social media, and then you are lazy for the rest of the day... The whole day gets wasted and you just can't get over my boring tasks , especially with pointless internet surfing?

Well, I realize thanks to eagle rising and reflecting on my own experience of wasted days that it really is all in how you START the day.

Always start your day with yoga (or light exercises or a simple jog) and meditation, much better than coffee. When starting with video entertainment you are hitting your brain with a whole bunch of dopamine right away, now the rest of the day is going to have to match that in some way, so remedial tasks get boiled down to nothing of value.

Really true, for me it was browsing reddit memes right before I even made my bed and went to brush my teeth. And then I would wonder to myself why Im not satisfied with myself in the morning, which later snowballs to the evening and eventually, relapses.

It takes quite the discipline to just stare away from your phone and relax. I know it took me a lot of time in my reboot to discipline myself to be a bit more productive and healthy in the morning.

Now my routine is waking up, making my bed, brushing teeth, 1 glass of water is a must!
Then I either go to the gym or I do some alone walks in nature parks I have in my small town, it has such a soothing effect of calmness and it helps me being more positive about life and reflect on what my life should really be about.

Great post, morning routines cant be underestimated!

This morning, instead of browsing on Reddit which I would do every day, I got up and ran on my treadmill for around 30 mins on 7km/hr and I feel so good. Later today, planning to study Japanese for a few hours and calisthenics.

Also, I would like to share this video from Kurzgesagt:

which motivated me to stop wasting my time, e.g. to stop pointlessly surfing on the Internet. Our time on this planet's limited and we got to make the most of it.

    Thanks for this post!

A good tool is a scheduled ‘do not disturb’ on your phone. I block internet etc. on my iPhone for at least an hour after I wake up (even better, turning you phone off at night and/or keeping it in another room!!). It not insurmountable, but, at the very least, it makes you conscious of bad habits. For me, looking at the news first thing is a great way to start the day if I want to be in a bad mood all day.

Another neat trick I’ve learned is, if you want to exercise in the morning, to put your gym gear in plain sight and just set yourself the goal of getting dressed in said gear. You feel obligated to exercise once you’ve put it on!

Great post, I've been guilty of starting my day with youtube videos and such, I've been very unproductive lately and I can feel I'm losing my attention span.

  9. I usually start my day by surfing NoFap a little bit

Maybe I tend to escape my inner void (addictive personality) that I spend so much time on NoFap.

NoFap isn't high-stimulating, but it's still... unproductive for me (especially when I spend time surfing [reading stories/posts] but not offer support or journal on my thread).

    I sometimes think I'm dead inside. :emoji_upside_down:

  10. I used to surf this site a lot too. Lately I really cut back and its quite nice. Its better to surf this site than watch porn obvi... but i would recommend you try not to come here too much merely out of boredom. Instead, come here in those moments when you need encouragement, are struggling or need a dopamine hit. This strat works well for me. Good luck!
