I think that my brain chemicals being imbalanced is why those SSRI's aren't affecting me

Is it possible? I believe that porn has desensitized me, but can it desensitize you to the point where these drugs don't work on my brain? I've been denying them from my psychiatrist (he was very persistent), and I refused them. I still don't want them.

My guess is that it's your dopamine system that's out of whack and not the serotonin. People with anxiety and ocd responds well to SSRI, while those feeling low motivation and dysthymia does not. Talk to your doctor about switching to something less serotonegic, such as SNRI or atypical antidepressants like mirtazapin.

And to answer your question, all antidepressants alter the brain. In most cases, this means that you will be more like the person you were before the depression.

I don't have the same psychiatrist anymore. This was a while ago, but he didn't believe in my porn addiction and he kept pushing specifically, mostly the SSRI's. I think he may have actually dismissed the SNRI's. He was ridiculous. I'm glad that I left him to go to a different clinic.

So let me ask you an important question, are you saying that because my dopamine levels are low, means I have low motivation, which means that the SSRI's aren't affecting me like they should?

Why do SSRI's not affect people with low motivation?

I'm seriously think that porn affected me so much, that SSRI's don't have an affect on me anymore.

He is doing his job, for better or worse. Psychiatrists offer SSRIs first hand, nothing new there. Porn addiction is still not classified as an addiction, despite sharing virtually all the components of other addictions.

Most likely, your dopamine receptors are down regulated. SSRIs doesn't affect you primarily because you aren't taking them. They also affect mainly 5HT-receptors, which are not directly connected to motivation.

Dopamine is the neurotransmitter most associated with motivation.

Then how do I vouch for a different class of medications, if the psychiatrist is pushing the SSRI's on me? I don't want SSRI's, they fuck up your libido.

And of course the SSRI's don't affect me because I'm not taking them. I took them once, and they didn't do anything different while I had the desensitization.

I wonder what happened to me?

    I have a similar problem.

I tested the neurotransmitters in my urine recently and it revealed that my problem is mostly very low glutamate and GABA and PEA. Interestingly I had discovered on my own that scopolamine gave me almost instant relief from depression, and scopolamine apparently increases glutamate.

Magnesium glycinate is something that you could try too. Scopolamine is a prescription.

Scopolamine isn't approved for depression, but ketamine is approved and works in similar ways.

You need to take SSRIs for at least six months to see results, since their mechanism of action is brain plasticity. Singular use won't do a thing to anyone.

They put a wet blanket on your libido, yes, but they are also safe and very effective for a big number of patients. If you want something else, it's useful to point out to the psychiatrist that certain side effects are not acceptable to you.

Ketamine is indeed a promising new antidepressant and it will be interesting to see it on more patients. Might be certain drawbacks with long term use.

I stopped going to him at the end of 2019. He sucked. He kept pushing SSRI's on me, I felt like it was peer pressure.
