Mine is the 1960s. You had the civil rights movement, the hippies, the Beatles, Grateful Dead, Peter Paul and Mary and the Doors, the best jazz scene with people like John Coltrane and Miles Davis, and of course psychedelics.

This, though, at the risk of sounding evil, read everything I'm about to say: LGBT rights shouldn't have to be a thing. Hopefully in the future, we'll realize that blanket rights, I.e Human Rights, are better for everyone, regardless of their personhood. Respect and compassion need to become foundations for our human rights, then we wouldn't need "special group" rights, excluding humans as though "they" are anything but.

Wait, this isn't the Utopia thread. My bad. :p

But yes, I like this time period. Sure, it has strife, but which age didn't? I have access to vast amounts of information at my fingertips. Information I might have never had, ideas I may not have ever read or heard. Modern medicine is also amazing.

    I enjoy it very much.

That's exactly what I meant, you got it. LGBT are human beings, like myself an everyone on here (I hope everyone is human...), so there shouldn't be a "they" mindset when it comes to other humans. ;)

I like being alive today and feel like the present has unique challenges that make it worth it. I’m happy for that.

But I do go through phases of reading and “obsessing” over different points in history. It was Ancient Rome last year and now it’s the Weimar Republic.

For me the end of the 90s, the beginning of the 00s, this is my childhood, the best period of my life, game consoles-Dandy, Sega, etc., the emergence of pc games. Serials and films with your favorite actors. Friends, soda, chewing gum, and a life without worries.

Weimar would be pretty cool to live

Watching a nation crumble into an abyss and give way to political extremism and decaden- Wait a second…

I’d like to live in French Algeria just after WWII to see how it was described in the stranger

Man, Weimar is cool because you can see the degeneracy giving way to extremism even in its art, not just the pornography and sleaze but the serious art made by good artists. The movie M. is such a great example: a compulsive child killer is hunted by cops and criminals, examined in depth by psychologists. Good artists are so good at stepping outside a perverse society and showing it.

I was teaching poli sci and watched a fantastic doc on Weimar Germany and the rise of Nazism. I’ll DM it to you later (phone posting). I believe it was a history channel doc but it was recommended by a woman that taught international relations, and it must’ve been before all the alien and occult Nazi stuff took over that channel.

I also loved a book on Mao I read called “a revolution derailed” by Andrew Walder, a Harvard historian.

That's pretty interesting. I've never heard of that movie, I'll have to drink beer to it one night.

    Please do.

I wish I could experience the 60s. Less bull crap than what we’re experiencing right now, especially all things woke. The 60s was when men were men and feels like a place I’d fit in. Only bad thing from the 60s was the Vietnam war. I also like the 80s but prefer the late 90s more.

Learning more and more about Rome recently, it has always been my favorite time period, but I never delved into it.

I read the Aeneid at the start of lockdown and really enjoyed it. I followed it with an ITunesU lecture and it gave me a pretty good intro into Ancient Rome. Before that I had only read bits and pieces of Cicero and Augustine for school.
