I've been very worried lately since I watch TV and browse the internet, and every once in a while a sexual image will pop out of nowhere and I've been very anxious wondering to myself if it's a relapse and if it will have any effect on my recovery.....despite me not being in search of those images....so I'd love to know thoughts about it

Literally just happened to me. I figure if you leave the image asap its not a relapse but if you sit their and look at it it might be if your doing hard mode.

So a relapse has to be an image that you're purposely searching for? Rather than something that popped up out of nowhere?

I think so, if its not your fault and you get rid of it asap I think your streak is intact.

Yes and no. What are you watching? I know if I put a movie with “ mature” rating that I’m almost sure to get sex and nudity. I know that social media is full of sex and nudity. Are you actively avoiding sites and movies that “ may” have sex and nudity? Your addict brain will tell you “ this is ok because it’s a popular movie” but you also know it has sex and nudity. For ex-Game of Thrones, very popular series, full of soft core porn. Ask yourself if you are being honest about the movies you watch or sites you visit, because it’s a very slippery slope.

I am not actively searching for sexual images or content, they sometimes pop up during ads on TV or on the internet, so I wanted to know if it's a relapse when someone consciously goes searching for those images

  7. Yes, this has worried me too, man I believe this is not quite a relapse but the beginning of one, because it will generate triggers in your mind and eventually the temptation will be very strong

So is it a relapse when someone is actively searching for those images then?

This exactly. You can’t control what inadvertently pops up but you can make choices that limit the exposure.

Yes, if you are actively searching then you are basically getting dopamine hits before you actually “ find”.
Studies show that in drug users they start getting high before they even shoot up. Their brain lights up with the ritual of just getting the drug ready, lighter under the spoon, etc.

Addiction has deep rooted rituals, things you do before you have actually Pmo’d. This is where learning your particular addiction cycle and inner, middle, and outer circles help you break free.

  12. My personal opinion is that if you come across some sort of sexy imagery during your routine day it does not count as a relapse. It's out there and almost unavoidable. For example if I'm watching a tv show and bikini clad model shows up in a commercial, it's not a relapse in my opinion. It's a problem if I then grab my phone and start google searching for her which could be the trigger to return to porn.

Or-lie to yourself and say “ wow my wife would like that brand of bikini, I’ll look it up and see if there is one she would like”. This is how sneaky your addict is. You are actually getting little hits of dopamine by doing that.

You need to ask yourself if you really want to be free? Fantasy is just as bad because it will always lead you back to your addiction. This is probably the hardest to fight, to stop all fantasy.

My mind keeps telling me it's a relapse everytime a random image pops up....and I don't know what to do, since it keeps me in a constant state of anxiety and worry....and I always have to reassure myself that it's not a relapse because I didn't go searching for that image

So why does your mind telling you it’s a relapse cause you so much anxiety? Is it because then you say to yourself” well I already relapsed so what’s the point might as well pmo?” It’s not a relapse, but even if it was and you just move past it what’s so worrisome?
