Harsh. Affluenza, drug-related deaths and suicide from lack of purpose aren't better than dysentery. Having spoken to people from Eastern-bloc coutries, some people liked the stability of the Communist regime. It's not necessarily worse than being made to feel inadequate for not being a world-beating entrepreneur. And then there's the rise of extreme endurance sports, etc.

Water can give you dysentery? At least there ain't no fluoride, birth control, or any other funny chemicals in the water.

No social mobility? Not to far off of how we live now. At least it isn't an illusion, and it was unheard of for a commoner or peasant to ascend the system. Like now.

 

Other than dysentery, you are basically describing the modern world. At least as a medieval serf I would get to take every Sunday off, and then every feast day too.
