Debate - Why are porn usage risks not covered enough?

Discussion in 'Off-topic Discussion' started by Deleted Account, Oct 7, 2021.

  1. As the title says. For you, what are possible reasons for not screening or at least warning for porn usage related symptoms?
NoFap and other sites like RebootNation have self-reports that, in some fields of research, are considered valid evidence (like with obesity statistics). Yet international medicine and psychology is keeping at arm's length when it comes to addressing any of the data or claims.
Even worse, there seems to be a drastic increase in medical research papers that tell you masturbation is good because A,B or C--notwithstanding that most people masturbate using porn as a way to get excited, and back to the question at hand we go.

    Speak your mind!

Porn Industry must've pulled a Coca Cola and bribed their message into those medical research papers.

Conspiracy theories and Antisemitism aside, I'd wager it's because most of the researchers themselves have a mild addiction to P and don't want to hear or see or follow up on any evidence that makes them think poorly of their favorite dopamine source. People act like scientists are these godlike beings, rational in all ways, beyond the corruption of impulse and subjectivity. No they aren't. They're human beings who love S. Why do you think the stripping industry is so well researched?

If it's not the researchers themselves, it's certainly the grant writers. There's no money in quitting P.

    Follow the money.

  8. Yeah, some react like scientists are infallible as much as the Pope speaking ex cathedra on the Catholic doctrine. Honestly makes me think such adoration might justify technocracy, one day.

Apologies but that's a really lame excuse, your control group does not need to be 100% free from addiction, you can do your stats in many different ways (i.e. you can compare daily addicted vs weekly, etc..), you can control the conditions in many other ways to get your data. I don't want to give them ideas, but you can go to a primitive tribe, and give some of them porn access and compare their newly messed up brains with their peers.

There is simply no interest because it would go against one of modern day's most important drugs. and as Meshuga mentioned, there is no money in it. But on the other hand, there is plenty of "studies" that will tell you that preventing oxygen from children on continuous basis and hiding their faces is "good" for them.......

    1. Funding for research comes from governments, and until recently, compulsive sexual behavior disorders (which our compulsive porn use and subsequent symptoms falls under) was not recognized by the manuals governments use to classify health disorders, so there was little funding and/or research. Communities like NoFap and YBOP may be on top of the latest porn addiction research, but the amount of papers Congress has to parse through to decide on what to give money to is so astronomically big that no lawmakers have likely ever seen the same research (unless pressured by conservative religious groups).

In the DSM-5 from 2013, there were proposals to include language that would have recognized compulsive porn use as a mental health disorder, opening the floodgates for federal and state money for research; the proposals failed, due to lack of evidence at the time, so there will likely be little research done in America with the reduced federal funding. However, in the last month, the ICD-11 was published with language that includes "compulsive sexual behavior disorders", which exactly matches the criteria of porn addiction described on NoFap and YBOP. Expect larger amounts of international studies to start trickling in, and maybe even some government inquiries into the effects of compulsive porn use on their GDPs.

    2. All the talk about masturbation to prevent prostate cancer is a result of clever statistical language and shady tactics by American medical companies. While there does seem to be correlations in some studies between more frequent masturbation and a reduced risk of prostate cancer, there have also been studies that have shown no correlation. There is also no correlation between having more sex with ejaculation and prostate cancer, which is functionally the same as masturbation. In short, scientists just don't know why or if there is sometimes a connection between ejaculation and prostate cancer: I'll repeat that, scientists don't know why or if there is a connection between ejaculation and prostate cancer. Anyone who says otherwise is just lying.

So why all the fuss about prostate cancer? About 1 in 5 American men get prostate cancer in their lives. However, it usually doesn't do anything for your entire life, and if it does kill you, you'll probably be really old (+75 y/o). Medical companies love diseases like this. Here's their strategy:
    a. Find a disease that lots of people have but doesn't kill them right away (prostate cancer)
    b. Encourage lots of research and public discourse on the disease through donations and lobbying
    c. Advertise "screenings" for the disease, even if no symptoms present (a practice that is much more common in the US than other countries)
    d. People hear about the disease, get scared, sign up for a screening
    e. If you have the disease, you pay for that company's treatment, even thought you don't have any symptoms and likely won't die or have other adverse affects from the disease for years
Specifically for prostate cancer (but also for plenty of other diseases), American medical companies advertise the disease and their screenings for it in order to get more diagnoses and revenue from treatment, even when their treatments are basically useless. This is much less common in places with nationalized healthcare organizations (like the NHS in England) where the goal of the company is not revenue, but to maximize the population's health in order to maximize the country's GDP and economic output. Since prostate cancer is a huge cash cow for the American healthcare system, it is likely they will continue to work against any research or experts that identify compulsive sexual behaviors or treatment that involves abstaining from sex or masturbation.

  11. At the forefront of it all, the useful idiots of the porn industry are those who are reacting to centuries of tradition which state that porn and masturbation is bad for your health. Many of these were religious doctrines- and since religion = "anti progression" then it follows porn = "progression".

I know that's pretty lame but that's how it works in today's modern day politics where the anti establishment has become the establishment.

It’s simple, porn/sex/masturbation is one of the many avenues of hedonism present in society today which allows the rat race to function and continue. Just look around. The only way people cope with being 9-5 wage slaves is through hedonism and escapism. Drugs, alcohol, sex, porn, TV, movies, Netflix, sport events, video games. This is what everyone indulges in when they’re off the clock. It breeds complacency. Those at the top who pull the strings of the world have made sure these avenues are widely available. It’s to make you docile, so that you accept whatever plans they have for you. Why do you think porn is free..? Why do you think phub premium was offered for free at the start of the “pandemic?” Seriously people... figure it out. The world is far from sunshine and rainbows. We are being controlled and manipulated through every aspect of our lives. Just look up Edward Bernays and how he used Freud’s psychology to manipulate masses into doing things. Watch documentary century of the self.

Yeah it kinda sucks, but the research on internet porn addiction has only been going on for about ten years, so the fact that the ICD has already identified it is spectacular. Internet porn has been around for a really short amount of time, and even though many of us on here suffer greatly, it's really not a huge societal issue yet. Its effects are also seen primarily in men, since the obvious symptom is inability to get erections during sex but high arousal from porn; women can have sex just fine if they're addicted to porn, even if they don't like it, and that can be chalked up to lots of other reasons.

I don't go preaching about porn addiction to everyone I know, but whenever I hear my friends talking about themselves or their boyfriends having trouble in bed, I show them articles from YBOP and tell them to try to stop watching porn. It's worked really well for the boyfriends of two girls I know, even though I don't think had addiction levels of abuse.

Unless you become a researcher with a PHD or a politician, there's not much else you can do. Fight the good fight, help people when you can. It's not a huge societal issue yet, so no need to take any radical steps

Correction... unless you are rich enough to fund your own studies. Researchers have a job like everybody else, they dont get to just fuck around and research whatever they want. Who ever pays their salary is going to tell them what to research. No funding, no study.

And yes.. it is definitely a huge societal issue, and always has been. Because people are oblivious to the consequences of their actions does not mean there are no consequences. The problem, just so you know, is masturbation. Do you think porn was created for people to sit down and watch with your family or friends like a movie? No, it was created for people to masturbate to. Does it exacerbate the problem of masturbation? Probably. I know I used to masturbate using strictly my imagination at least once a day if not more for the first 5 years of my addiction. The fact that you're making this out to be some kind of brand new problem in society is laughable to me. If you don't masturbate, you don't watch porn. It's pretty basic, and the opposite of that is not true.

If you wanna get rich ad donate much of your money to porn addiction research just because you're nice, thank you very much! Good karma right there.

The problem is not masturbation. Humans have been masturbating for longer than recorded history with little to no issues. Some animals masturbate as well. The problems many of us experience did not come to light with the advent of masturbation, but the advent of highspeed internet porn. Check out these articles from YBOP experts to understand why internet porn, not masturbation (or even old types of porn) is the cause of our ailments.

Evolution has not prepared your brain for today’s porn

How is Internet porn different from porn of the past?

Are there any guidelines for healthy masturbation?

Are my sexual problems (ED, DE, low libido) related to my porn use?

Masturbation in moderation is not shown to have any adverse affects in the average person. I agree that PMO abusers, including myself, need to abstain from masturbation during their reboots in order to recover (and may never be able to incorporate it into their lifestyle afterward like myself), but otherwise, masturbation is healthy as long as it is done in moderation and without great intensity (like all natural rewards, like eating, having sex, exercise, etc.). If you're coming from a religious standpoint, this is not the forum for that.

ASIDE ***Much of the "advice" and behavior around masturbation in Western cultures (particularly North America) comes from traditional views on masturbation and progressive views that simply defy the traditional ones. In traditional Western religions, aka Christianity, people were told not to masturbate. There are lots of reasons why this happened, but it just did. People would think they went to Hell and God hated if they masturbated. This created a culture of secrecy and taboo around masturbation. People wouldn't talk about it (except when religious teachers said not to do it), and the taboo around it made it even more arousing and stimulating; doing it was openly known as a dirty, self-kept secret. Parents also did not talk with their children about masturbation because that was only meant for religious teachers. When teaching extended to secular groups and away from religious teachers, these new teachers did not talk about masturbation (because it was only supposed to be taught by religious leaders), so no one would teach anyone about it. People did it, but they thought it was bad, leading to shame or cycles of binging and abuse.

On the other hand (pun intended), progressive thinkers like to defy traditional values just for the sake of it, and since traditional religions say masturbating is bad, progressives say do it as much as you like and that it's great for you! It's obvious binging and compulsive use of anything is bad, but progressives are still hanging on to their ideas largely because female masturbation is still taboo and they're trying to get rid of that.

So on one side, you have traditionalists saying any masturbation is bad and if you do it you'll go to Hell for all eternity. On the other side, progressives want to defy the norm and say do it as much as you want, no rules allowed. Both are terrible role models and teachers. Normal people can masturbate in moderation just fine, but porn abusers should stop for their reboots and possibly forever to maximize recovery.***

Masturbation alone can cause "death-grip" and physical desensitivity, but these problems are almost entirely confined to the flesh and structure of the penis, which is relatively resilient and can heal quickly. Most people with deathgrip see significant changes in sensitivity after abstaining for just a month and then having sex. Using lube or lotion while masturbating can also have significant sensitizing effects in less than a month.

This is simply not true. Plenty of people that abuse porn for long periods of time, especially the most extreme themes, begin to watch porn without masturbation. I was one of these people. The arousal of the material from years of conditioning is almost untied to physical pleasure and completely caused by pure dopamine highs. Being able to view constantly novel material for hours is incredibly addicting. Since there is no release through orgasm, watching porn without masturbation can be even more harmful because it can continue without the boundaries of sexual exhaustion or the refractory period. People who move to watching porn without masturbation after previously doing so, in my opinion, are in far deeper than others with addictions.

I suggest using YBOP to find more info on these topics. That's where most of the info and guides on NoFap originates from.

I’ve thought about this before. I kind of think people don’t say anything about how bad porn is because they don’t want to come off as “uncool” by talking about sex in a more traditional way. I honestly think it’s that stupid of a reason. Sex is everyone’s dark little secret, and they get joy from joking around about it or making little sex jokes throughout the day. By discouraging porn use, they are seen as “serious and not cool”, so they don’t do it
