I often see people talking about hitting the gym or go running as a way to improve oneself. Personally I've been practicing martial arts for a little bit longer than I've been doing NoFap and it has helped me a great deal, so I wanted to share with you some of the advantages I see in it.

First, it has most of the advantages of the gym or jogging (exercise, pushing your limits, keeping you away from PMO, boosting your confidence as you complete your challenges, etc), but you also have a teacher who might push you further than you would on your own.
Most martial arts are not just about hitting someone (although you can use that aggressivity to beat PMO), they also teach you a lot about respecting yourself and the others.
And you get to meet new people, so it's really great for people like me who have PMO-induced social anxiety!

I'm not saying martial arts are better than the gym or any other sport (everything I said would also apply to any team sport I think), it's just that I have spent a lot of my life not doing martial arts and now that I do I love it! So I wanted to share it, maybe some of you will try it and love it like I did.

    Peace guys, and be strong.

I just posted new thread asking for advice and low and behold, I come across your thread. Great idea! I've always wanted to get into martial arts. I'm 31 yrs old so I'm not too old to get started. Lol! Thanks for the advice. Much appreciated.

I think it is definitely a good idea, I started Karate beginning of last year and I think the self control that I have learned in it certainly is helping me in the PMO as well as the smoking thing now.

I also agree that is has the same benefits as going to the gym, I for one never could do the gym thing, just felt out of place, but the people I meet in martial arts, mostly seem to think the same way I do and enjoy the same things and it keeps one fit and in shape. To each his own I guess but I can recommend a martial art to anyone. It really does help with self-confidence as well.

Does anyone other than @Amukadi8 and @warriorofthelight70 train any martial arts? If you guys read this post do you still train and what do you/did you train? :)

Was gonna start a martial arts discussion thread but this thread seems worthy of continuing on with :D

To declutter my signature let me post this video I had in it here lol,

Also this thread is now open to martial art film discussion as well. Donnie Yen is currently my favorite kung fu star, Jacky Wu Jing kinda fell off the radar what a shame.

Anyone seen Donnie's latest yet? Two thumbs up!

    Jacky Wu we miss u!!

    In honour of the Wu,

You may be wondering how martial arts films are relevant to self improvement? Well many of them contain life lessons and the philosophies embodied in the arts, martial arts are not just about learning how to fight or be a badass in all aspects of life.

If you are new to them I suggest starting with Jet Li's films. Might just whet your appetite for kung fu cinema,

Dragon Tiger Gate aka Lung Fu Moon is about three young martial arts masters whom emerge from the back streets of Hong Kong to help the powerless fight injustice.

The film was based on a manhua titled Oriental Heroes.

How is it related to self improvement? Well it is about good vs evil duh. To improve fully one can't just sit around and allow evil to overrun the world, what kind of half assed self centered improvement would that be? No, the world needs heroes.

I like to think fapstronauts are a kind of hero in this age of sexual filth and corruption. We are the bringers of justice and knowledge to a world stuck with their hand to their groin while being hypnotized by digital filth perpetuated by the venomous kraken that is the porn industry.

My performance during training improves too, reflexes are sharper and the fighting comes more natural. More confident while facing someone during training, but I can also pickup the technique exercises a lot faster.

We have a very friendly group, sometimes maybe too friendly but the philosophy is very realistic

We got a few black belts in our group, one of them teaches kung fu, another karate and another aikido/aido.
I stick with Jiu Jitsu for now.

Martial Self Improvement Quote of the Day:

“The Chinese words ‘kung fu’ translate more or less as ‘a man hard at work over a long time’. If you want to unlock the full power of kung fu, it is not going to be easy: you are going to have to work, you are going to have to sacrifice and you are going to have to suffer – over a long time. There really is no such thing as a free lunch.”

Jacky Wu we can't get enough of uuuuuuU!

Just rented this movie, Skin Trade. Kind of relevant to fighting the porn industry, no?

Martial Self Improvement Quote(s) of the Day:

"There are so many misconceptions about the ninja; especially in the West where they are characterised in sensational movies, television shows and books as little more than ruthless assassins and spies for hire. They are portrayed as black clad magicians with supernatural powers who can appear and disappear at will; who can swim like fish or fly like a bird; who can walk on water or predict the future."

"There are, of course, those ninja who can execute their craft so well that they give an appearance of being able to perform these super human feats; but appearances, as you must know, can be deceiving. Ninpo is a science, not black magic."

"As for the ninja who have been depicted as mere mercenaries, this is an unfortunate magnification of isolated cases. Certainly there were "rogue" ninja, as there were rogue samurai or sailors or anyone who went awry of the code of justice they had sworn to. But these were minor compared to the whole. Those of you who have read my book, Ninjutsu: History and Tradition, will probably recall that portion dealing with this aspect. Rather than seeing themselves as mercenaries or thugs, the ninja "considered themselves to be merely practitioners of political, religious and military strategies that were cultural opposites of the conventional outlooks of the times. Ninjutsu developed as a highly illegal counter culture to the ruling samurai elite, and for this reason alone, the origins of the art were shrouded by centuries of mystery, concealment and deliberate confusion of history."

"The history of the Ninpo, in fact, is marked by a strong code of moral and just behaviour that applies not only to the fighting or military aspects, but to the everyday life of the ninja. And learning to attain sei shin (or right mind) is essential to becoming a ninja."

"Some facets of the moral code are:
    · Loyalty, bravery and trustworthiness.
    · He must be fair minded; exposed to the different ways of thinking and the customs of different types of people
    · He must also be a man of virtue and commitment, willing to defend justice without selflishness and without fear of death.
    · He must not engage in petty arguments or have double standards."

"Then there is the understanding of the spirit of Budo, the samurai, the perfect gentleman-kind hearted, understanding and devoted to his training."

"Being called a ninja is a great honour, like being called a great samurai. One who seeks peace and enlightenment, not violence."

    Hey
Thanks calm for directing me here.
I also do martial arts though my training has been scattered a lot.
I do wing chun kung fu mostly but not for a long time. My uncle taught me some basic things and then he had leave for personal reasons. Then I had trained in a school for a while, but again I had no time to actually dedicate myself to it.
