    Hi All,

I was just wondering what people use as porn substitutes and how to get over them

Typically it's something like videos with scantily dressed women, or erotic stories. But it's really anything that turns you on in a way that is unhelpful for your recovery.

In terms of overcoming them, it's probably best to first identify what yours are.

I don't know why you would want to know which ones people use/used, and I won't post mine, because I don't want to push you toward a relapse.
A trick for getting past them though, is to stay busy. And even when you aren't busy, be purposeful about your relaxation. Don't just sit on the computer surfing the web, plan your websites, and ask yourself the question, "If my mom were looking over my shoulder, would I go to this website/do this search? Same with tv and any other stuff that can lead to porn or porn subs.

Ok, so its sexual stuff, because I find myself watching youtube for hours or chatting on facebook for hours with non sexual stuff and this seems to fill the PMO void, so I was wondering if these could be classified as porn subs

That's an interesting point: one tendency when people are giving up one addiction is to start displaying a different type of addictive behaviour. I can definitely hold up my hands and say that I've been drinking more (especially on my own), craving cigarettes more, and working more obsessively. My priority is killing my PMO addiction dead, but I'm also trying to display some self-restraint with my other potentially addictive behaviours. I guess browsing Facebook/Youtube obsessively isn't the worse thing to move on to, but it's not a long term solution. I guess the question is, are you OK with your behaviour or can you think of something better to do? Something that your true self would rather be doing?

I think with porn substitutes, we only mean things that sexually arouse us.

I end up playing a lot of video games. Granted, it's a waste of time too, but I don't end up feeling bad about it.

Of course it's hard to fill the void in the beginning. So I guess it's fairly natural ending up wasting time on the internet (which is risky...), or watching TV, playing videogames, etc etc..

I believe any past time activity that does not require commitment or other people's involvement can be called a porn-sub, it does not necessarily have to be activities with sexual content.

I believe that if sexual content is involved, it almost inevitably will lead to relapsing, it's just a matter of time. One can't spend hours a day watching suggestive/arousing images and not end up escalating in my opinion...

The real key to recovery for me is to get back to healthy habits, like doing sports, socializing, working harder, practicing hobbies, and ultimately, enjoying life!

If you're asking what substitutes what I was originally looking at I'd have to say my early triggers are now felt as strong hard core porn. If you're asking what positive action is taking it's place I'd say this site and writing I also watch a little more tv with the family.

Porn subs can be a load of things really... even staring at women. Staring at women for me is probably the hardest because since I am rebooted I can a boner instantly even I look for only one second its really difficult.

Porn Substitutes are anything that arouse you. It could be anything between magezine models to a picture of your grandma. There is a long list.

@g2stop, what I believe you are referring to is things to fill the void porn has left, not porn subs. Things to fill the void are things like reading, exercise, and other healthy habits. They are meant to better your life.
Do you think these are healthy habits? Imo, I don't think they are good things to replace porn with, especially Facebook and YouTube. They are both filled to the brim with thousands upon thousands of triggers and I had to block both of them. Down the line, when your brain starts getting desperate, I don't think you will want those as habits.

I would find some healthy habits to feel the void. They are much more rewarding, I promise you. I don't want to tell you how to live your life, these are just suggestions. Good luck figuring it out. I hope this helped.

It's a website to upload people's art. It's not all bad, but I'm sure people oversexualize a lot. I used it for awhile when I was in high school.

Think of it this way. The only acceptable substitute for porn is LIFE. Everything you do must be geared towards improving your life. If you are stagnating, then something is wrong. Have this mentality and it will work for you. Don't focus on the addiction or even recovery, focus on living your life the way you must.

My P subs have been pretty mild, so maybe P sub isn't the right word. What I've thought of as P subs have been those things that are more easily accessible, that are much milder, but have the same effect. Maybe the term for what I'm describing might be "pre-porn," if that makes sense?

I've dinged myself for seeking these out -- as recently as a few days ago.

  18. I've realised this week what my porn subs are. Although not causing me to M or Edge. Using it is leaving me a sex soaked zombie with no place to go.... So they must go. That is hindering my progress. I guess you only know this when you try things. I need to replace bad habits with better ones not substitute them. Not beating myself up over it but at least im now consciously aware and have no excuse. Onwards and upwards

  19. Erotic hypnosis. That crap melts your brain if you make the mistake of giving it a try like I did. It's just porn disguised as something else. F that shit.

Yep. Thankfully, I seem very resistant to hypnosis. Back when I was messing with that, I was frustrated; now I'm thankful.
