Capitalism to blame??

Discussion in 'Off-topic Discussion' started by MrSuccess17, Jan 12, 2017.

  1. Does anyone here believe that the culture that develops under capitalism is to blame for the surge in porn and masturbation??
All sorts of analyses are welcome e.g Marxist, Conservative, Liberal etc.

Capitalism by definition allows diversity in the marketplace, thereby granting the liberty to use of porn if one so chooses. However it's not a thing to cast "blame" on per se.

  3. A marxist might argue that capitalism commodifies sexual desire thus divorcing it from real sexual love in the interest of profit, would you agree??

  4. On fleek. Porn and pornified pop culture are fake portrayals of love and sex. Because real love and sex can't be consumed like that - you have to put effort in to get them.

  5. A feminist might say that pornography is a reflection of male dominance in society and also helps to reinforce and reproduce those same power relations.
A marxist might say its he commodification of human nature for profit and perhaps also the reinforcement of ideological relations supportive of capitalism.
A conservative might say its the breakdown of traditional values in society because of the pervasive influence of godless liberals.

Will anyone offer an analysis of porn in a sociological or political way etc.

Come on come on this stuff interests me!!!!!:D:D

I must say that I'm not very adept with sociology but I'll have a go! I'm not sure it is capitalism responsible for the rise because a large amount of porn is consumable for free now. The pursuit of pornographers is to make the "premium" market superior so porn consumption has almost shifted to a "freemium" model like iPhone apps. With the ubiquity of the Internet the pornographers look for a way to make the premium experience even more premium.

I think that the shift is a reflection of our innate desire for instant gratification. The world has shifted to giving us what we want, when we want it. Blockbuster went extinct because the idea of going to a video store to rent a film and being charged if you return it late isn't appealing when you can rent a movie online and start watching it straight away, or use Netflix where you can instantly stream thousand of movies instantly. Amazon will deliver same day now and are going to start drone delivery (or maybe they already have?) so that you get your things even quicker (10 years ago you had to wait 3-5 days fir pretty much any online delivery). As technology shifts, our need for instant gratification moves with it.

Now we look at porn. Originally you had to go to a seedy movie theatre to watch it. It was seedy and dirty. Then Playboy came and it became acceptable. It was much easier to get hold of but you still had to go to a movie theatre for movies. Then VHS came which satisfied that instant gratification side of things. Then the Internet came along and practically the first thing people wanted was porn. As Internet technology progressed, connections became faster and always on. Then the Tube sites came and I think that really accelerated the use of porn, because now there were full length free videos available and you could stack up several at a time.

That's my theory which I think partly explains it...

  9. A marxist will always argue the high road before they fuck you in the ass in the interest of the State. Capitalism doesn't automatically commodify sexual desire. The people do this and they can reverse it. If there is no demand for porn then porn will no longer exist, we have the freedom to make this choice and to oppose how sexual desire is displayed within a captalist culture. However, if you disagree with how the State believes sexual desire should be displayed within a Marxist culture then you're branded a traitor and shot.

  10. I think this extends beyond the economy and has its roots in our very culture. This all started long before Capitalism.

  11. You know, committed, deep, person to person love.

  12. Lol.

Love is a funny thing man.

Perhaps he was asking what your definition of love really even is in the above sentence.

Romantic love is overrated IMO but a sure hell of alot more worthy than lust.

Unconditional love for others is not overrated, just saying if you've ever been in love (romantically with one person), it's fucking crazy and can't be put into a short sentence like above LMFAO.

  13. Real love is sacrificial. It gives 100% of itself totally for the benefit of the one loved. Take marriage. Any husband who told his wife he loves her 80% and his secretary 20% could never be said to truly love his wife with the real love she deserves, and vice versa for a wife to her husband. Real love being sacrificial in nature is also why marriage vows include prosperity and poverty, because real love seeks no reward.

I don't think capitalism in itself is to blame. We want a competitive economy and the high-quality products that come with it. But when human greed comes into play - the lust and the obsession with sex and power and influence - that's when capitalism (and the country it's used in) go to hell.

tl;dr. Hold my beer, and watch me go fuck a bitch at the bar, knock-her-up and then not call her back. That's real love.

P.S. I love my secretary 80% and my wife 20%. Is that how marriage works?
