For the past year and a half I have masturbated on a weekly basis and watched porn. My faith has gone up and done but I thank God my light has never gone out. Unfortunately, I have not gone to confession to free myself from my state of mortal sin. Is that what is preventing me from growing closer to Jesus and choosing his love over worldly pleasure? Am I without God while I am in a state of mortal sin? No matter what, I have started taking my faith more and more seriously. It wasn't until this past weekend that I truly felt guilty for receiving the body of Christ. I pray that God forgives me. I just couldn't find the strength to say no while in a state of mortal sin. I could not handle that embarrassment. I pray that I will find the strength to confess my sins. I want to be with Christ. I want to feel his love. I want to be free from sin.

When we are in mortal sin we have lost sanctifying grace. This is us cutting ourselves off from God. So yes, it is hard to grow close to God when in mortal sin. Luckily this is easily solved by confession. Don’t worry about being embarrassed by not receiving. We should fear God more than man. And again, God is forgiving so get to confession.

Going to confession helps a lot, do it often. Even when you only have venial sins, it's going to confess them that makes it easier to keep the big ones to a minimum. And there's not shame in having repeat confessions. There's a reason the priest offers them more than once.
