From where do you know your misery?

From the Law of God.

What does the Law of God require of us?

Christ teaches us in sum, Matthew 22: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your
heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.
This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, You
shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the
law and the prophets.”

Basically, the Shema. Jesus was pointing out that those 2 are at the top and if taken in proper understanding all other commands are automatic.
Heart is used first in the original Hebrew, through the entire bible it was thought that the heart was where all "thought" came from instead of the brain, so almost anywhere you see the word heart in the bible you can substitute the word "mind"

The second word used is nephesh which is translated soul but once again, through the entire bible, nephesh meant entire BODY or "a breathing creature", meaning ALIVE not dead. It is not SOUL as we think of it today meaning "the only living part that goes to heaven"
