I think there is wide latitude for interpretation in these lyrics and a great deal of ambiguity. Is he trying to entice us toward reality or unreality? The sirens, however, are not ambiguous at all. They entice us that they might devour us. It is hardly a stretch to link this to addiction or even further, to the ancient murderer, who has hated us from the beginning and has ever lusted for the ruin of our race.
