The imagery or the idea behind it is the obsession. The compulsion to act on it is the leash. The obsession holds the leash, tugging us further along. Without even realizing it we hooked it onto ourselves. It eventually transformed into a chain, becoming heavier, more difficult to resist.
Yet it can be resisted and even broken. The strength of the chain is entirely dependent on our willingness to be lead along. With time, the obsession loses its grip, we take back control from the compulsion, and the chain begins to rust away.
Then one day we look back and find that it's no longer attached. It's subtle enough that we might not notice that it fell off at all. Then we realize that so long as we ignore the call of the obsession, we remain free from it.
