DELETE SOCIAL MEDIA

Discussion in 'Self Improvement' started by BradM6016, Nov 10, 2017.

  1. When I stopped playing video games I started having a desire to improve myself. After the urges and temptations to game wore off (took a few months) I suddenly found myself learning a new language, writing a book, and building furniture. There are a myriad of other things to do, but I found that I was unlikely to want anything other than video games so long as they had a hold on my dopamine receptors.

Yeah, that is something of a social epidemic.

Too many people are living for the 'likes' and 'shares'. What makes it really sad, is that many people evaluate their self-worth from how many 'likes' or 'shares' they get from what they post on social media. Yeah, those who constantly post online that everything's all hunky dory in their life. I mean: Who gives a shit about what you're eating at a swanky restaurant?

If there's any consolation, it's nothing more than a portrayal that their lives are a bed of roses. Just because you don't post stuff on social media -- or not very often. It doesn't necessarily mean you're not living a fulfilling life. It means that you also value your own privacy. Something many avid users overlook.

  3. I quit twitter and facebook six years ago, never been on instagram or snapchat, and used during the last two years website blockers like blocksite (i've been recently using the app Freedom because it works on Ipad too, and on the browser inside Steam). Social media are for me some form of social parasite (and dating app are worst). You don't need it to meet people or cultivate yourself.
At best it's a waste of your precious time.

On youtube i use extensions like Youtube DF (distraction Free) to go only on the channels i've choose. And with Videoblocker, i can block all channels who are useless and time wasting for me (and that left largely enough great channels to watch! :) ) The key is to gain control over how you spend your time, and stop using it on black holes ^^

Not having social media wouldn't save you from the times when you have nothing to do. That is when all the thoughts come and you might relapse.

Not necessarily. Social media can be a trigger and can cause relapses for some. As well slow down the progress of recovering from the PMO addiction. If my experience is anything, quitting social media stimulated my progress of recovery from PMO. Less procrastination, less time wasted and less sh!ts given. But more time freed up, more decisive and more clarity.

  6. Well some Facebook groups are extremely helpful so I'm definitely not deleting it. Twitter is a great place to job searching. I have a love and hate relationship with Instagram... It can be a stumbling block but there's also some good stuff on it.

One of the very things I’ve learnt from being off social media. I’m far more inclined to interact with people in person than through a monitor screen or a smartphone.

  8. I think it's a balancing act. I only have a facebook account as it's a good way to keep in touch with people and removing it isolates yourself socially. However, I think that's the only realm of social media which is necessary. Delete instagram, tinder, and other sexualised platforms within pop culture. It'll help with urges massively as it gives your brain the break it needs. Good topic.

Instagram and dating apps are highly sexualised. More reason to get rid when trying to recover and overcome a PMO addiction.

And yet some people want to complain about their privacy getting invaded on social media, especially Facebook, when they post personal things on social media for the whole world to see.

  11. Would Star Wars lore videos be considered useless and time wasting. Because I myself am a hardcore Star Wars fan who loves to learn about the lore of the Star Wars universe (legends or not). So would that be considered a useless time waster?

That would depend how much actual time you're spending on them, and whether they're preventing you from doing other things.

I did the same one year ago. It used to be constant distraction and also a trigger for pmo. I also used to get depressed comparing myself with others on social media.

  15. I think it could be a time waster, yes. Ask yourself : this video about star wars, is it redundant, do i already know the information in it? If it's only to just watch more star wars stuff you already know, i think that's a waste of time, yes.
And even if i love star wars myself, you could find many more universe as cool as star wars, and maybe contribute to the lore by drawing or create stuff related to star wars, not just watch to learn (maybe) something more ;)

Some youtube channel can open up so many doors to great things. Just for popculture, channels like "Nerdwriter", "Now you see it", "Wisecrack", or for videogames "Extracredits" or "Mark Brown" brings me so much more knowledge that i don't want to waste my time on redundant stuff i already know.

All the channels i judge useless in this way, i use my chrome extension (video blocker) to make them disappear from my youtube, because youtube always propose me stuff to click on it and to spend so much time on it.

But if it pleases you, just enjoy it ;)

yeah, social media sites have been a pretty small part of my life for a long time and I feel better for it. Tumblr was toxic cancer so I quit using that. Facebook got annoying so I only check that very briefly when I need to. Any other site just seemed like a waste of time. Twitter most of all. As soon as I stopped using Tumblr and then later Facebook, it was like I felt a huge weight lift off of me. I suddenly had more time to use for things I cared about and I was less stressed out of dumbass internet stuff that didn't affect me at all. I wish more people could see what a wasteland some of these sites are.

  17. Have you found that this creates a similar social media experience?

Been off social media for around three months as I write this. Like NoFap, it’s been a catalyst for me on striving to rebuild and improve my life.

  19. I deleted my social media account last month, so far, it's been working pretty well:)

I really need to get off Facebook. I don't want to delete cause I talk with some people there, but I really need to take a break of it. Instagram ain't that much of a problem, I just look at it once in a while.
