Books on addiction

Discussion in 'Self Improvement' started by GentlemanLlama, Apr 29, 2018.

  1. Hi all

I found this site about a month ago and am currently 10 days into my reboot after a couple of false starts. I'm feeling good, but starting to feel some of the temptations to lapse more strongly. Something that would really help me out is to throw myself into some literature around addiction and porn use to better understand what is happening as I go through the reboot. Obviously I have the NoFap lit, but just wondering if anyone has any further recommendations?

  2. I have read this book and was about to type it. Very good.

The jist of it: basically you have a habit loop. You have a cue, routine, and reward. And this habit develops over time. So for me (and porn addiction) my cue in its most basic level is horniness, but it's mainly my underlying depression, stress, anxiety, etc. Then a routine i picked up was watching Porn and/or MO. Then my reward in its most basic sense is sexual satisfaction (not really satisfaction, really), but more importantly a stress/depression coping mechanism to put my mind at ease.

Now, the book's main premise is not to simply "stop" your habit. That's a difficult thing to do because your brain is hard-wired to do said habit. But instead just change your routine. So you still get your cues, but change up the routine to get your desired result. So for me, when I become depressed (for example) I could instead meditate to achieve that same reward (peace of mind). So it's for any habit, good or bad
