[I originally mistakenly posted this in a "Journals" forum. Reposting here.]

I've been reading articles from the "Your Brain on Porn" website and it all left (a part of) me feeling like I never want to masturbate again. I can identify with all the negative effects they talk about that it has on your brain function and emotions--experienced all those negative effects and more. And I've always thought masturbation is needed as an "outlet" but that's starting to feel like a rationalization that enables the psychic part of the addiction (i.e., maybe I need to face that emotions aren't totally under control.)

(The only possible situation I can imagine when maybe it truly is "necessary" to masturbate is when you're really turned on by someone and can't have sex with them, but maybe I'm not facing that my libido isn't what it was in my 20's (i.e, I'm kind of guessing now that I'm old, blue balls won't be an issue).

Just wondering if anyone has experience with this and what their thoughts are (and if you'd like to just point me to a relevant journal, that's helpful too.)

    Thx, L

Masturbation is not, and will never be, necessary or "needed" in any way, shape or form. Period. Blue balls won't hurt you, you WILL NOT automatically get prostate cancer. The entire idea that we need a "release" is false. It is as if people think that if we didn't ejaculate, "pressure" would build up like some sort of air tank, and we would explode. This is inaccurate. There is no need to "clean the plumbing". The body reabsorbs semen: http://www.vasectomy-information.com/moreinfo/reabsorb.htm The body also has other ways to get rid of semen.

  3. Awesome reply, MW!

I would add to this that same illusion exists about having sexual intercourse. It is absolutely non-essential to have sex, compared to needs like water or sleep. For many reasons people and especially men believe that sex is like air and treat it as if their survival depends on it. Ahem... Just grow some balls!

Of course it's possible and realistic. I guess it helps when you know people who have overcome masturbation completely for a number of years.

My view of masturbation has never been the same after a guy I knew in junior high school gave it up (this was like 13 years ago). I looked up to this individual even before I became aware that he decided the only sexual activity he was going to have was with girls. He had an aura about him, character, and class that our friends just did not posses. He's a succesful model nowadays. Conserving essence did wonders for him. I'm not saying male models are noble or anything, quite the contrary, and I'm not putting him on a pedestal but I feel that it changed the way I view masturbation, and years later my view on it changed even more but that's for another place and time.

I also don't want to say I judge people because I am no one to judge anyways, but if I find out that someone does not masturbate because their sexuality is highly 'refined' and they have self-discipline and a virtuous nature, I admire and look up to a person like that. That doesn't mean I look down on someone who masturbates, because again I am trying to overcome this myself lol and all people are worthy of respect regardless of habits like this, they just don't command the same admiration from me I guess.

You know that's a strikingly unhelpful response. As I acknowledge, I'm struggling with the question--partly because it's a widespread belief in Western culture that it IS necessary in some shape or form (e.g., to "protect against Prostate cancer, as a "healthy outlet," etc)

The problem is that society tells us all the time: ´´Sex/Masturbation is a must! Everybody needs it at any time of his entire life!´´
But thats simply a lie: Sex/Masturbation is a want, not a need.
You will recognize what really is a need when you become ill.
And that is not going to be sex/masturbation.

    http://selfdefinition.org/celibacy/bernard/physiological-value-of-continence-part-3-chemistry.htm
The last para here reads, "From the foregoing, it is clear that there is an important internal physiological relation between the secretions of the sex glands and the central nervous system, that the loss of these secretions, voluntarily or involuntarily, exercises a detrimental effect on the nutrition and vitality of the nerves and brain, while, on the other hand, the conservation of these secretions has a vitalizing effect on the nervous system, a regenerating effect on the endocrine glands and a rejuvenating effect on the organism as a whole."
