The porn industry is worth billions. The pharmaceutical industry makes millions possibly billions from antidepressant prescriptions. The government makes tax money from both. There is not going to be any hurry for them to ban it.

I read on here that apparently Russia blocks porn and encourages people to go out and meet people. A great idea I think.

Alcohol causes immeasurable problems in society like violence, diseases, criminality of varying types yet beer is advertised everywhere, look what happened with prohibition in the states in the 1920's banning stuff doesn't usually work especially when it's something so ingrained in society and widely accepted despite the harms.

I also don't believe porn is ruining our life. It's how we ruin our lives. We obviously cant change the porn industry, but we can change how we deal with the lack of happiness in our lives that lead to over consuming a substance c.q. porn

And how would you plan on enforcing the ban?

Even if you block all porn sites, there's nothing to stop people sharing porn on websites that aren't "porn sites" eg torrents, file-sharing forums, etc. Or people could just use a VNP to get around the blocks.

And what about non-porn sites that will have nudity such as art or medical or lingerie websites? What's to stop people using them for fap material?

And lastly, as long as the porn involves consenting adults and is watched by adults who choose to watch it, why should we be telling adults what they can and can't do?

Professional porn also creates jobs- actors, directors, cameramen/women, people to build the websites etc

 

I guess porn is protected as free speech in the US? Anyway, I would not be in favor of banning porn. It would be like the "war on drugs" only worse, because there are more porn users than drug users.

 

I totally agree but personally I wouldn't chase porn if it wasn't for the accessibility. I wasn't into porn until I got a computer. And it got out of hand when I got a smartphone. Mags don't do it for me. If they blocked porn I'd just go looking for the real thing more I think .

The alcohol industry was worth a lot of money, but that didn't stop Prohibition. In fact, making pornographic movies was largely illegal up until probably the late 1960s(?) That is why the films from that period did not usually show full nudity and definitely didn't show the act of sex.

That is my impression anyway. I'm not an expert on the history of pornography of course. The free speech legal arguments in favor of pornography began in the late 1960s and it seems that winning these cases allowed the porn industry to take off.

 

It is banned in some countries but that doesn't stop people from being addicted to it. There are members of this site that live in countries where it's banned but they still struggle with PMO.

 

Porn, both digital and printed material like magazines, has been illegal in Iceland for almost a decade (Iceland is a very feminist country and the feminists wear the trousers when it comes to lawmaking. They believe porn "objectifies women") but it's not blocked and basically completely unenforced. Apparently some newsagents still sell porn mags and noone cares.

Making porn illegal is just one of those laws people pass thinking it's the right thing or because it looks good in theory, but in practice it's just not possible to enforce.

And like I said, even if it were blocked there's nothing to stop someone using TOR, a VPN, proxy etc.

The only way to stop people looking at online porn is to shut down the entire internet.

 

For an analogy, should we make alcohol illegal because some people are addicted to alcohol? Or should we focus on helping addicts recover, and focus on harm reducation and responsible use to help people who want to indulge do so safely and to help prevent people becoming addicted?

Same with porn.

Also if alcohol/porn/whatever is illegal and someone is addicted to it, that may have the unfortunate consequence of the addict not seeking help out of fear of ending up in legal trouble.

 

And even without criminalizing porn, there is shame that produces similar results. There is anonymity in most online forums but it is still shameful to admit to PMO. This forum is a rarity in allowing people like me to share experiences and thoughts on PMO without being socially ostracized.

I think these addictions thrive on shame, because we cannot see them with the proper perspective or learn from others or forgive ourselves. We begin to think we are so shameful and flawed that there is no hope.

 

Yes, shame and stigma can also prevent an addict from seeking help.

Whatever the addiction is, the addict needs a space of some sort to be able to talk about it.
