The tumblr porn ban

Hey as you recently might have heard, the website tumblr decided to born all kinds of porn on their platform.
Now a lot of LGBT related groups are concerned about it because they see porn as a way of identifying themselves through alternate art etc.
Do you think this was a right move by tumblr? Your thoughts on this?

  2. I think it's great! I'm not sure if they necessarily did it for the reasons I would have done it for, but either way it is a win in my opinion. I wish more media platforms decided they didnt want that garbage on their site.

And before anyone goes crying about censorship, keep in mind that this is not a ban on porn. People can still make porn and watch porn if they want, just not on tumblr. Whoever owns tumblr has every right to not allow porn on their site, just as Alexander doesnt allow it here on his site. This is not censorship.

Not sure how I feel about this yet.

  4. I think that's brilliant, keep porn off of regular sites as it can stay on their own manky domains. Far too many normal sites including social media ones have it sprinkled about, and not only do younger folks use them it's also completely unnecessary.

And as far as LGBT groups I would hope they would rather be seen as people rather than a fetish, I mean really I've seen that excuse brought up before but honestly they're just essentially being objectified. I hope they find other better means to make their identity stand out, because using their body is a terrible way to do so.

  5. Hell yeah its a good idea, the less porn on the web the better. Like Ginny said, porn should be kept on porn sites only and not on mainstream sites.

I find it difficult to see this as anything but good.
Like others have pointed out porn can still be found on other sites for those that want it. Tumblr is meant to be a social media site, its not an appropriate place for it imo.
Also as a gay guy i cant see what the problem is from an lgbt point of view. I dont see that porn can really be considered 'art' in the usual sense - nobody watches it to appreciate the artistic merit, it only appeals to the most basic instincts, it involves little to no talent, creativity or skill.
And for those that do think its art there are dedicated porn sites to get it on. Using porn as a basis for or expression of identity ends up creating massive problems - what normal person can live up to the physical perfection and sexual prowess we see in porn. Its a fantasy, not reality.
Also i dont want my identity to be all about the sex of my partner, or what we do in bed.
Im assuming tumblr has banned all porn not just gay porn so its not adversely or disproportionately affecting lgbt people.

  8. I guess Christmas came early!

Also, maybe I am misguided but why exactly do LGBTQ need to use art to explain their sexuality? Then is normal straight porn considered art from straight people? I think LGBTQ groups should look for alternative ways to explain their lifestyles, their struggles, and their own identity issues than using suggestive imagery. Straight people have done so for years. If I offend or am misguided please inform me of my ignorance so I can better work to expand on my worldly view.

ALSO THIS IS THE BEST THING THAT EVER HAPPENED TO ME. I've been trying to set porn blocks and software to block access to pornography, but for some reason I could never find a way to block porn on Tumblr. I'm glad that this is happening, because now I won't be tempted to use this website (not that I have had in the past) but because the blockers can provide 100% safety (or so they thought).

Disclaimer: I am not anti-porn in no way. I want my lifestyle and my lifestyle alone to be anti-porn has been a source of significant issues in my life.

I didn't realise there was any porn on it. I thought it was another alternative to Twitter or what's App. Is that wrong?

I never said I don't like "trans folk".
I don't automatically hate people because they have a mental illness.

  11. I think tumblr had a lot of artsy gay blogs. Nudity, not porn.
Guys, should we tell him about porn on Twitter?

While Apple's actions were the trigger point to Tumblr banning porn, SESTA/FOSTA was probably also a factor. The most obvious and intended ramifications of SESTA/FOSTA have already happened: Craigslist shut down casual encounters, and Backpage and Rentboy are over, which has killed some of the main connection points of prostitution in the US. Mainstream social networks are presumably on notice to keep prostitutes out. Judging by Tumblr and Facebook's new policies, they're going to do this by removing practically anything sexual. Expect a lot of misguided censorship and confused users.

Why should we even care about their sexuality? If someone can’t think of personality trait she or accomplishes in their life other than “I’M GAY!” then that’s a pathetic life to me anyway.

In the 1990s, they asked to be viewed in ways other than their sexuality. We gave that to them. Now they want to revert back to that standard of judging based on sexuality.

I actually like transgenderism not being considered a mental illness, and I hope it isn’t ever reclassified as one, mainly for two reasons:

    1. The government is not obligated to pay for the surgeries, or to fund them as much, because it’s not a mental illness (last I heard, it’s a 25+ year wait here and all of them are done in Thailand because we don’t have a physician specialised in transitional surgery).

    2. You must be a certain age to go through with it, because it’s not a mental illness.

  19. I think the ban is a good thing. Lots of places ban porn. Why shouldn’t Tumblr be allowed to block it? Frankly as a recovering porn addict I think it all should be banned and eliminated but I realize that’s an extreme statement.

  20. Exactly, I think some people in the community (like all communities really) take things to far and end up letting their identity circle around this thing. Imagine if I came out and said, "I'm straight and I'm proud." Everyone would have a very different reaction.
