OK guys. For the first time ever, I've maintained a spreadsheet noting my patterns of sobriety and relapse. I used to only track sober days, now I track everything.

A problem I've always had is that when I relapse after a good run, it takes weeks before my next good run. I have a sober day or two here and there but no consistency.

How do I address this behaviour? I hate who I become in these intervening periods. I hate it. I'm desperate to get sober again but I don't know how. Thanks for the help, guys.

I recommend using the pluckeye extension to start your streak. It will block all images and videos from the internet for however long you want.

Dude... this is seriously one of the best things you could possibly do for your recovery. I applaud you with a standing ovation.

Keep doing what you're doing. Simply noticing your behavior patterns is one of the most powerful tools you have for changing them. Keep tracking your relapses. The more you recognize the patterns in your life, the better equipped you will be to make a difference the next time things come up. It's going to take some time, but you'll get there :)

I'll just add that as you become more aware of patterns, you'll notice what brings about the relapse: for example, in many cases it's because of a bad mood. Once you know the reason, start figuring out what to do instead of heading straight into the clutches of PMO.

    Get stubborn. Stop trying. Do.

Stop thinking about PMO as a thing you're refraining from, managing and getting under control, but as something that just isn't you. That you just don't do. Be that new you. Commit to it. Just decide not to relapse and keep deciding that each and every time it comes up. You've made your choice, your decision! Why change it? Be the man you wanna be. Think of it as permanent thing, a state of being rather than an act you can or fail to do.

You know you have the strength in you. Just get over your fear and tap into it. Unleash your true self.

Thanks for all of the useful feedback, guys.

I've been trying for years but it's only the spreadsheet and conscious attention I give to patterns that have given me any success. I feel like there are only 3 or 4 scenarios that cause me to relapse so I just need to work directly on those, as well as improving all aspects of my life. It's just making that first committed step that's the hardest.

That's it, isn't it? You have to decide and let the decision soak deep in, so that your determination from then on comes from the very marrow of your bones.

It's always that decision. There are times when I lie to myself and think 'today I'm gonna quit!' but there are other times when I know I'll quit. And then I'll have a damn good run, then I'll relapse. This thing is horrible.
