Does the urge to look at porn become ever so powerful when you're using your PC, tablet or smart phone? I can guess for most here the answer is yes.

What has helped with my success is limiting the usage of technology in my personal time. On my PC I installed software which locked out my PC completely (Cold Turkey) and only gave me 30 minutes a day to use my PC. I then configured my PC to block adult content web sites whilst I was on the web (Open DNS).

In regards to smart phones get rid of it if you can and go back to a traditional mobile phone. If you cannot do this do some research and take measures to prevent wasting time and viewing porn on smart phones.

Restricting internet usage in your personal time is very important to success. Otherwise recovery for example is like being in a Casino when attempting to recover from gambling addiction. Restricting internet usage as much in my personal time is only one factor in my recover,y though it's the most important.

What have I been able to achieve in my personal time away from the internet? I've been able to sort out my home. For years I had a very disorganized home, it's now de cluttered and organized. I also spend a lot more time with family and take nice long nature walks which are very good for the mind and soul.

Give it ago and starve the dopamine cravings for porn.

I totaly agree, this is the way I chose. But, even though I've been living like that for years (limited pc access by choise and no smartphone), it's only during last half a year that I was able to keep clean (except for two relapses). The reason being probably, that only then I really made the choice to keep clean. Prior to that, my addcicted brain constantly found ways to work around limitations, even if "only" for a peak. I guess the problem here is that the limitation itself makes the "forbidden stuff" more pricy to your addict brain.

  3. the problem really is that we all need to use the internet. if you could go offline without any problems regarding your work or social life, it would be so much easier to get rid of the porn habit.

Not many people are able to go completely offline (though it sounds good from some aspects), but you can always minimize your online time. Nowadays the default is to be online and available 24/7, due to smartphones. I don't think this is healthy, even without the P.

I tried and got sucked into Instagram the other day for a few months and it was an eye opener! I deleted it the other day and feel a thousand times better again.

Very good points. Sometimes porn use is a symptom of internet addiction.

  8. Yes the internet is my problem and if I could I would probably remove the internet entirely from my life, at least for a significant period of time.

The internet is a huge time waster. Before putting in place restrictions I'd spend hours either looking at porn or viewing videos on YouTube. The YT videos were educational but didn't really improve my life.

The internet is a huge dopamine goldmine. God knows what's happening to our brains with all the dopamine rushes we have with modern technology. I'd also suggest a dopamine fast for those who think they could cope with one.

Since I decided not to use computers when alone (I chose not to know the password), I get good offline time. The down side is I can't always do everything planned (for example, now I'm looking for a job). But it's better for me that way. But I still had to really choose to stop using and to follow the rules for staying clean. Since, like I mentioned, I was constanly using P in the past, even though my computer time was limited. The addicted brain always finds a way around. Even if you somehow go completely offline, but keep fantasizing, it doesn't make you clean.

  11. Only using the internet when you are in public or around family is a great way to kick this addiction!

Internet might make things a bit more difficult, but it's not the problem. You know the saying "Where there's a will, there's a way", it can be applied to bad things too...

Exactly. Need to choose to stay clean, each day, regardless of opportunities. I already compared it to cigarettes which I could easily buy anywhere, but are not relevant for me and not interesting, so i don't buy and don't smoke, even though it's easy to get them.
Just had a temptation in thought, about downloading some P via p2p, since it's very easy. So what? It's a new year, and feels so good to be clean. Sorry, not interested. Let's do something else.

Edit: As I mentioned, my mom is a recovering alcoholic, she has been clean for 8 years now. My parents' house has alcohol, for example, some wine for holidays, but it's not relevant and not tempting for her. Same in my house, I do drink socially, but I'm never tempted to drink alone, no matter how bored, anxious or depressed I might be.
Really want to have the same feeling about P.

  14. Some people might need to stay completely away from internet until they build the strength and determination to stay clean. As @Road to freedom says porn is not even tempting for me anymore.

As I said, staying away certainly helps, but ain't a solution :D

  16. Oh, it definitely was a solution for me.
Willpower will get you maybe 14 or 30 days but to go longer than that you need serious rules and unbreakable limits for when you hit the wall and waves of withdrawal, brain games and indifference.

As a person who must use his neighbor's WiFi to be online due to some lowlife stealing my telephone cables, yes, the internet is my problem, the lack of it.

  18. I've been jerking off for over 6 decades. When j first started it didn't take muck to get me in the mood. It changed over the years as access to other things got easier. There was a time I did go to a porn shop to buy a magazine and then VHS tapes and DVDs. Then PPV porn on cable came available and then the internet. I really don't think I would go out and buy porn in a store or online if the cable TV or internet became unavailable.

Ok, I think this thread shows just how different each person's addiction is. Some could recover from porn addiction without restrictions in place and some couldn't.

I had to place some very strict restrictions on my PC to prevent me straying into porn. Early on in my recovery I simply just didn't have the will power at all, everything was automatic, so placing restrictions helped greatly.
