I was going on day 5 on NoFap and then I relapsed on day 6. I keep telling myself that "it's okay if you relapsed, just hold on"....and then I go on for 3 days and then I relapsed again. How do I end this terrible cycle? How do I find an anchor to gain control?

Maybe you could build up to it in steps rather than setting the bar so high?

Next time, just see if you can go for 7 days, with the intention of actually fapping once the week is up. Then give yourself a reward for achieving 7 days of NoFap. Then once you've done that, maybe try for 10 days, then if you achieve that try for two weeks, and build up like that, giving yourself a reward after each achievement.

This will change your psychology around it. Rather than considering it a failure if you relapse, consider it a success when you achieve the shorter milestone you set out to achieve.

Often we need to build up to things in stages, build up our strength. It's like if you had the goal to cycle 100 miles, but then consider it a failure if you collapsed with exhaustion after 15 miles because you haven't built up the fitness yet. Instead, you should try to cycle 10 miles one week, then 20 miles the next week, then 30 miles, and so on, giving yourself a pat on the back for achieving each improvement.

People here say you need 90 days for a full reboot, but 90 days is a HUGE mountain to climb if you've only ever walked on the flat, if you catch what I'm saying? Instead, practice walking up some small hills, then some bigger hills, until one day the big mountain seems like a more achievable goal.

For what it's worth, I think the longest I've ever managed to do NoFap for is about 4 weeks, so if I can get past that then I'll feel like I've achieved an improvement.

  5. Welcome to NoFap!!!

I've been in the same situation. Relapsing every 2-3 days at a constant cycle. I suggest you keep yourself distracted from porn instead of forcing yourself to not relapse. You can keep yourself distracted by simply finding useful things to do like getting a GYM membership and forcing yourself to head to the gym at a set schedule. I also recommend cold showers whenever urges do kick in. One method which has driven me into gaining disgust for porn is writing down the different thoughts you feel right after a nasty relapse. Write down how shitty it makes you feel and how porn is currently affecting your life.

Here's a quote from my own note to myself after a relapse: "I've been trying to quit porn for 1107 days , 158 weeks, 36 months... That's 3 years!!! I have to find myself. This path I'm taking is leading no where. I still don't know what I want to pursue as a career, I feel confused, unmotivated, unloved by the opposite sex. If I had just one wish it would be to never have allowed the invention of porn."

To change a habit, you need to change the lifestyle. I noticed on my last relapse that everytime I relapsed i was in my bed with laptop and internet. And funny enough I can't seem to change this.

  8. LinuxSucks reminded me to make that clear for you guys. It is a habit. Which means it is replaceable by something else. Do your research. Read a book on power of habits. Of will power. Get the decision to stop. Read the forum. There is no problem, which is absolutely unique.

My response is going to be a little different from those of others, but along the same lines as 1978 above who had good advice.

IMO, you're simply starting off too aggressive. And I'm one who believes masturbation is perfectly healthy, but do what you think is best for your body. I would say for anyone trying to recover from porn addiction (I've been through it, so I fully understand what you're going through), start off with this:

    * No porn. This includes thinking about porn.
    * Try to start going at least 2-3 days between orgasms. And if you decide to masturbate, simply do it to your thoughts about a real life girl, not a porn star or a porn video you've seen in the past. Do it to an imagined sexual encounter with a real girl.
    * Also start working out and eating better. You'll feel better about yourself and in my experience that helps with libido.

If you follow the above steps I provided, I would be SHOCKED if you don't notice major improvements within 2-4 weeks. Honestly the key is simply staying away from porn - you do that, your dopamine receptors will re-sensitize to normal stuff and when you just see a girl walking down the street who has a nice shape, or maybe you can see her bra outline through her shirt, you'll start feeling your dick twitch. :) And that natural arousal is a nice feeling.
