Anyone here with gaming addiction? Don't you feel it's very similar to PMO addiction?

What does masturbation/pornography sell you? A lie. A lie that you actually have sex when you're likely single, a lie that all the hot girls strip for you and would do anything to please you, a lie that you're the king of the hill and the most successful male to ever exist. Because, hey, you "had sex" with over hundreds or thousands of women. But what do you really do? You fuck your own hand while all those women don't even know you exist and even if they did, they would more than likely never have sex with you anyway.

You fuck your own hand while watching someone else enjoy the life you want and the woman you want.
    Why is gaming the same?

What does gaming sell you? A lie. A lie that you're actually this special hero, this commander, this mayor, this whatever, that you kill your foes and get loot. That you produce things, that you craft things, that you're basically the master of everything. That you killed tens of thousands or even millions of foes. That you're a modern day Genghis Khan. That you made billions worth of goods, that you created cities, that you are the top dog or among the top dogs in what you do. They tell you you are successful, over and over again. But what do you really do? You waste your energy, youth, resources on something that does not exist and does not benefit you in the slightest once you turn off your computer or they shut down the servers. Or they decide to do something that completely changes your "progress or achievements" (like rebalancing a character, adding something new that makes your stuff worthless and so on). What do you really do? You sit in front of the computer mashing buttons, getting ecstatic or angry or sad on something that does not exist, working on something that adds zero value to your life.

You bash buttons while watching someone else (your avatar or minions) enjoy the life you want.

    AMEN

What you say relates so much to the game 'rust'. Should have never discovered that game in the first place.

  4. Yeah video games are really a bad habit for me too, that I need to cut out. I would just rather be doing other things with my time, and when I've sat there for hours playing video games I feel guilty at the other things I didn't do. I think the similarity between porn addiction and video game addiction all comes down to the same thing: dopamine

  5. As Ginny Weasley said it's about moderation and control. People can get addicted to almost anything if the reward is there and if they are predisposed to addiction. It's not about the activity itself, it's about using the activity to escape negative feelings and becoming a priority despite negative consequences. How do you define something that adds value to your life? Is you enjoying yourself not adding value to your life? How is enjoying video games any different from enjoying reading, dancing, singing, gardening, exercising, cooking, shopping etc.?

  6. The difference is that all of those other things that you mentioned don't involve screens. If I could fill my life with those kinds of things, I would have a full life. Those are the things that I feel guilty about not spending enough time on when I've been binging on video games. For me, if moderation in porn was possible, that would be great. For me, if moderation for video games was possible, that would be great. I'm looking to eliminate bad habits from my life, and if I'm honest with myself, video games is one of those things. Please don't take it as I'm attacking "gamers" because if people can enjoy it without problem then great for them. I'm just talking about me

  7. Fair enough. I misunderstood the original post as generally saying video games are a waste of time. But comparing video game addiction to PMO addiction makes a lot of sense.

Well said. Games aren't that bad but only a good thing if you truly find joy in it. Everyone should have time to relax sometimes, I have a good friend which does do a lot of productive things every day and he said one time to me, that he plays video games because for him it's not a waste of time cuz he truly enjoys it and has full control over his mind in that regard.

I personly stopped playing video games because they didn't gave me that feeling, for me playing games / watching series / animes / Reading manga is a loss of my presence and as such my time. I still sometimes read a chapter or two but that is really rare, but playing is something I've cut out of my life almost entire.

  9. After quitting PMO I feel like I can enjoy videogames again, although I have quit CS:GO three months ago. I really crave some matchmaking... But that shit ain't good for me.

This is a very good comparison. I would like to ad some other similarities, that I noticed about porn and video games.

    1. Both release loads of dopamine. This neurotransmitter is an important part of our body. It is GOOD. But games and porn release it in amounts that are normaly not achievable in every day life. This way, porn and games become the highlights of the day, as they release more dopamine then everything else.
    2. Both are impulse driven. You normaly don't plan gaming and fapping in your daily life. You do it when you "feel like it". An impulse normaly has the following stages:
    a) an impulse
    b) growing tension
    c) pleasure on acting
    d) relief from the urge
    e) finally guilt (which may or may not arise)
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Impulse_control_disorder
    3. There are always people in your life, that seem to have it all figured out. They seem to know when to stop playing. And they seem to know when to stop fapping. So it apparently works perfectly well for them to do porn and games (or drugs, or gambling). But this is a fallacy. They have the same problems like you do. They just don't admit it to themselves or to others. These people have a very negative influence over possible escapists, because they always pull them back down into the hole.
    4. It gets worse over time. At the beginning you do porn once a month, when the parental pc is unguarded and you sneak up to it. Later you do it 5 hours a day. Same with gaming.
    5. You do it to escape reallity. And when you get back from your trip, the real life hits even harder.

    No reason to get insulting.

It's not just an assumption, but an observation i had while watching all my friends do it. Ofc it is dependant from the type of game, but i personally don't know anyone who doesn't follow an addiction playing League of Legends or World of Warcraft. Even the professional streamers often claim, that they didn't want to play that much and are cursing the game.

Nobody in this thread blamed the video games. And nobody doupted his own responsibility. It's just that some people here suffer from video game addiction and porn addiction alike, and whant to change this. Thats all.

I disagree. I see videogames like a form of art, in the same way that I do with movies or books. Of course, it depends on the videogame you choose to play, but they can be a great experience if you compliment your life with em, not if you base your life on playing em and not doing anything more!

  17. I’m in college now taking computer science classes. I took Intro to CS in high school (c language) and APCS(in java).
I’ve coded the game 2048, but i’m probably not nearly as experienced as you. I haven’t had any experience modding or making maps and i have no idea how. But it just sound a interesting.

What language do you code in?

  18. Video game addict here, while it is true that they dont carry over into real life such as loot and rewards, they definitely are not useless, i grew up playing video games, and they speak to me and effect me in a lot of ways, they have made me a better person in life, i was bullied a lot as a kid and video games was one way i could escape it and go to a better place, they make me aspire to be something better, and if the characters has great friendships than it makes me want true friends, or if i see the characters struggling it gives me something to emotionally relate to. If i play a crime fighting video game such as persona 5, it pumps me up and makes me want to treat people even better, it makes me want to grow as a person. So those are some examples, in the end what you get out of video games differ from person to person, if you do not emotionally connect to your video games and take something away from it, than it is useless to you. But without them i know i would be a way worse person than i am today.

  19. The first language is always the hardest to learn, after that any other language shouldn’t be too bad. The nuances and syntax will be different but i’m sure you’ll pick it up quick

  20. Udemy is a great course for beginners. There are tutorials for all kinds of language, there should be one for c++. It costs money though but it’s worth it. Is c++ gonna be your first coding language?

My MOM is actually going through a course on udemy in java, and she’s not even a programmer. But she might get laid off her current job as a paralegal and realizes she might need to do something else (coding) so she can be more competitive to get another job
