Good morning, after coming across alot of nofap content over time I have decided to join this site.
I'm a 37 year young male, been watching porn and masturbating for many years, ever since I was a teenager. Im tired of this, dont want it in my life.

I have tried no masturbation, no porn and nofap in the past before and have only achieved 1 month max. I have NOT been able to make it past 1 month and have many, many failures in trying only to last a few days or a week or two.
I dont understand why I cannot make it past 1 month and why it is so hard sometimes?

I have seen and felt the "positive" changes from nofap, however I have only been able to achieve this shortly. My desire and goal is to make it to 90 days! I have read other people made it so it has to be possible.

I dont have to share my negative experiences from indulging in this bad habit, you all know them well too.

    Welcome.

Good that you're asking why. Lots of people will only report the time frame and never even ask that, and of course the answer is not to be found in the amount of time just as you don't ask a ruler why something is 12 inches long.

This obsession with measurement, which is not only in NoFap but in addiction recovery in general has to give way to a better understanding of causes. I see your avatar photo being the mudra so you probably meditate. Look at how everyone meditates, what do they focus on? Time. How many minutes. That's like if you had a worker and they only focused on how many hours they worked and never gave much thought about the tasks themselves. Of course with a job you may get by and still get your paycheck, but the chances that you'll get a raise and a promotion is a lot lower if someone just shows up and put in time.

And regarding meditation, that's completely ignoring there was originally a whole spiritual path associated with it.

We want to improve our lives, so that's what we have to look at. I don't believe in a passive form of recovery anymore, by which I mean essentially abstinence only. It's fine as a basic starting point, but just not fapping is like doing the bare minimum. I am for an active form of recovery.

    Hello awe,
yes I am familiar with meditation. I have meditated in the past and plan to start it regularly again soon, which reminds me. When I did 1 month nofap, I used to meditate regularly.
My obsession with time is because I have read 90 days is the time to adjust your brain, plus read a book years ago about semen retention which stated that 100 days was required for a man to heal himself form abusing himself sexually.
What do you mean by an active form of recovery?
From what I have read, proper nutrition, sleep and exercise all help with nofap as well.
    Thank you for responding.

Taking care of other things starts to get at it, but it's really a matter of being actively involved, which means not just going on autopilot. You can have a "script" (which some people equates with program and I disagree with that) with nutrition, sleep and exercise and never note what works and does not work for you.

To me a program for active recovery is where you get the feedback from results and constantly adjust rather than just going by an arbitrary standard because it's supposed to be this certain number and/or because you've come to identify a long streak with your self identity and esteem on this forum. I think it would be psychologically naive to completely ignore that dynamic where people want to stand out in a recovery community (either online or IRL) but that is doing it for other people rather than doing it for yourself and just because it's the healthy thing to do.

The word program indicates there's more than just a list of things to do and adhere to, we think of a computer program where it takes input and based on that information then does this or that with it - we should have at LEAST that much sophistication with a recovery program. Lots of times people come up with this laundry list and there's not really much meaningful processing with the result/feedback, you might hear people say stuff like "does it get easier" after 3 days or when does X symptom go away, that's obviously a perspective where people are just waiting and want the results without being involved in the work of figuring things out.
