I have been working on quitting porn and masturbation since January of this year and while I'm not totally free yet, I've made really good progress so far. Recently however, I think I might actually be developing symptoms of clinical depression.

Over the past few weeks I've been on a downward spiral and its finally to the point where I'm starting to think I have a problem. I've been experiencing some physiological signs of depression (random chest discomfort, unexplained digestion problems, decreased appetite, tired during the day) as well as some psychological symptoms (thoughts of self harm and feelings of hopelessness and being alone). I have never had these thoughts/feeling before so I was really caught off guard by them. I'm otherwise in great health and while I certainly don't plan to act on these feelings, they are present and concerning none the less. These symptoms have also been negatively effecting my personal relationships and my grades at school.

Has anyone else experienced symptoms like these during a reboot or should I be concerned that this is an unrelated problem that I need help with? I've never felt this way before so I feel like it must be linked to brain changes or decreased dopamine or something related to rebooting. Thanks for your thoughts!

What you are suffering from is pretty normal when you quit any addiction. I suffered from nearly all these symptoms when I quit my Facebook addiction and I am starting to feel them again now during quitting porn.

You might want to get that checked out by a doctor. Turned out I had Morbus Chron, and I had the same symptoms.

I've been feeling down several times theoughout my current streak as well. But considering that we're holding back on some dopamine, it makes sense to feel down.

My experience so far has been depression like symptoms that come in waves. In between there have been periods of feeling clear and happy. Also periods of extreme craving for sex/ Porn.

I believe it is all part of withdrawal. Mostly it is down to reduced dopamine in the brain and amygdala hyper activation. This means the brain has a reduced capacity for experiencing pleasure and easily goes into fear mode / shuts down until such a time when the fear response stops spontaneously occurring. But this takes time. I'm told it's worth it in the end. Also the periods where I have felt well have been awesome. Just wish they would last longer.

So what does "really good progress" mean exactly?
if it means that you haven't masturbated and haven't watched porn since January and yet you have these symptoms it might be a depression or sth like that otherwise if you masturbate from time to time and watch porn it's common to have depression.
but still if you have these symptoms it might not be bad to check in with a doctor although any medication might have side effects.
