Internet Addiction has Taken Over

Discussion in 'Self Improvement' started by Fallacious D, Oct 15, 2019.

  1. After 26 days of not fapping, I feel less proud of myself than I should. That is because I have replaced my porn addiction with internet and gaming addiction (which existed years before I started watching porn). Even when I am bored of playing games and need to do other things instead, I force myself to find something to play just to pass the time. As a result, I have missed school assignments and failed to meet other responsibilities. It's time to stop.

Today I will broaden the scope of the animating contest. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.

From now on, I will add a new section to my reboot journal: Internet goals. I will be more restrictive of my use of the internet, and will try to limit it to necessities, and reward myself at the end of the day. I will start by going dark for a few days just to get a sense of how deep my addiction goes. Good luck, me.

Anyone else suffering from Internet/Gaming addiction?

I definitely have experienced this addiction. Countless hours spent on World of Warcraft throughout my highschool years eventually had me glued to my screen for up to 8 hours a day. Without it, I was lost. I had no idea what to do. Now, I don't play anymore. I would recommend not entirely removing the internet and video games, but instead replace half of the time that you spend online with other activities that engage you. for example, I now train Muay Thai and Jiu Jitsu. These are activities which I have become very passionate about, and they fill a lot of the time that I would otherwise be spending playing video games.

I also think that it is important to try and find games which limit the possibility of addiction. For example, World of Warcraft was so addicting for me because of the endless amount of content that I could pursue. I would say try and find a game to occasionally play in which there is a means to an end. Sports video games are good for this I find. Anyways, good luck man.

Also, beware that most video games are designed to be addictive. This is how big corporations make their money.. By hooking people to their games.

  3. I agree so much that addiction-farming has become the name of the game these days. I bet if I stuck to single player games that are immersive but not necessarily addicting, I would be able to control myself. Kind of like watching a movie in the evening. Even things like WoW where you can find an inn and log out after you've done a bit of adventuring. What gets me is the multiplayer games where rounds/matches are short and you just keep joining new lobbies over and over. My weakest point was ARK, where you never want to log out for fear of being raided, etc. It's like a full time job, only you aren't getting paid.

Plus I can completely relate to the martial arts thing. It's one of my favorite hobbies too - I practice Judo and Capoeira. It's hard to train those skills alone, but I can definitely work out and do exercises to help improve my performance on the days I meet for those classes.

    Thanks man.

I had a friend who was addicted to ARK. I remember he would tell me about how he would set an alarm in the middle of the night so that he could log in and tend to his dinosaur eggs or something. I'm sure you can now see how ridiculous these things truly are! I think we're both on the right track brother, good luck to you!

I would not worry too much about the gaming, just focus on making it past Day 30 of NoFap. With the gaming when you are ready you can just abruptly erase the games and go cold turkey. In my case I decided to abstain from The News because it was putting me in such a bad mood I decided to just stop watching the News including Internet news. It is poison

  6. That's why I always say... There is no reboot without you replacing your former habits with new and better ones. Pick something that makes sense to you and get busy. :)

    Wish you luck!

Definately internet addiction. I've cut out youtube and meme sites, but I catch myself constantly checking google news for updates. I barely read anything on there anyways. Also, this site, for a while, I would get bored and come here and look through stuff to waste time. Im in the process of reducing my time on the internet and time on my phone. There are way better ways of spending time.

I can relate with the addiction for porn, internet, movies and gaming.

    internet
I have quit Facebook & instagram for 2 weeks now and nada, zero urges to go back.
I used to spend hours and hours endlessly scrolling and getting dopamine hits from useless likes.
Yesterday I sent a hand view of close friends a msg asking them their number before going black on Facebook.
I already know I'm 100% done with it and will never go back. F-you zuckerberg!

    Porn
I have been clean from porn (videos) for more than 4 months now and also zero urges to watch something.
For most of my life I watched porn and fapped to it which left me with PIED.
Of course I have a mind full of dirty scenes that are still uploaded in my brain and it will take many years before
they are mostly gone. But, they are not haunting me anymore.

    Movies
I still enjoy watching movies and series, but decides not to be a big couch potato any more and just limit my
movie time to some evenings before going to bed and the occasional cinema visits.

    Gaming
Gaming is still a addiction, but I have been spending less time on it, because of being so tired in the evening.
too tired to get into big single player games. Right now I'm limiting it to 3 hours a week.
What helped me a lot was ending the PS online subscription, preventing me to go on online raid with my friends.
Yes, I miss being social with my friends, but I will find something better to do with them.

I should have done this a long time ago, but these addiction mostly were caused by my depression, loneliness and boredom.
It took me a while to realize this and also to find something positive to replace it with.
One of the things is being on this nofap community sharing with you guys.

  10. After a month of NoFap or so, I rediscovered the video game that I was addicted to when I was in High School: Sid Meyer's Civilization. You younger folks probably don't know it.

I explain it to myself that the brain could not get dopamine from porn any more, but this bitch knows where to get its stuff. So I decided to quit video games as well.

I had a lot of trouble with youtube, and I still watch a lot, but I have a blocker that removes the recommended section and the right sidebar so there is much less things I WANT to watch.

I still could do it better though. Internet addiction is maybe the worst, because it is endless. Porn is maybe just a part of it.
The problem is that I cannot just quit Internet, who can? We have work assignments, and most of us use a computer, emails and a web browser.

  11. Whats the youtube blocked called if you don't mind me asking?

  12. It's an extension for the firefox browser, I think there is a Chrome version as well.
It's called "DFYoutube" (for Distraction Free Youtube)
You can set up which sections you want to have blocked. I also have blocked the comments and the notification bell.

So horrible when you're sitting in front of the screen, dozens of tabs open, you download everything. And once you ejaculate you delete everything in anger. A day later you hate yourself for having deleted it.
Then you go back and try to find the same videos again.

It's a shame. I am so relieved this is over for me. I will never do this again.
