Thanks dude! That'll be my rule this month. I might consider allowing for in-person social screen-use next month, e.g., watching a movie with a friend or with my wife after the kiddo's in bed.

  2. Okay, the week is finished. This week I'm going day-by-day basis and see what happens.

Last night my wife was looking at complete crap on her phone while I was cleaning our daughter's filthy shoes. I then went to sleep early (anticipating our daughter's screaming 5 a.m. wake-up) while my wife continued looking at crap on her phone. The benefits of this challenge were very clearly illustrated.

  4. Love this post. I have so many times experienced the same thing, I’m doing productive things while my wife is scrolling some nonsense feed.

Oh by the way, now she’s vacuum cleaning while I’m on the sofa. Haha

  5. Since I love to read, I try to replace reading on a device with reading on paper, but the thread tells me I should decide of a specific time, for consistency

I will add one more rule to this: no typing on the keyboard after the deadline. I tended to turn off the screen and write notes after the deadline. Since I didn’t have to watch, I closed my eyes and typed... this resulted in me going into some kind of meta state between awake and asleep, which is just ineffective.

If I have to write notes, I should do them before my deadline.

    Interesting!

Could you write your notes with a pen and paper?

As for being ineffective: really important point. There are so many issues with screens. One of them is what I've heard people call "workism": the idea that we're supposed to be working all the time--if you take a break you're not hard-working enough. I definitely suffer from this from time to time. I know I'm most productive when I'm happy and healthy, for which I need breaks. It's important to know when the cost of working, in terms of exhaustion and burnout, exceeds the payoff. And it's important, though sometimes difficult, to act on that knowledge.

Another night that, I feel, was massively improved by staying off my devices. Thanks for creating this challenge!

  9. I wanted to mention that, but was afraid of the reaction. Not based on the person. I don't know why I thought it could have been received with hostility.

  10. I definitely agree with you and I've often had similar thoughts. It's not unusual that I start feeling particularly fresh at, say, 8 pm, and I could work for many hours from there on. I would be excited and productive, but it's too exhaustive in the long run. Well, the next morning is already going to suffer. So I need to respect the schedules that I've planned.

I was on the phone last night and absent-mindedly went on the Amazon app after I hung up. Back to 0. I'll learn from it though.

  12. Is it ok to ask what you mean when you say the Amazon app?

Oh sure. It's an android app that connects me to my account on Amazon.com. Sometimes I use it to shop. The other night I clicked on a notification about a package getting shipped. (It's not a porn website focusing on tall women, if that's what you were wondering :D)

If I have the time, I'm going to change the notification settings on that app so I'm less likely to inadvertently use it in situations like that (a phone call drawing me to the phone).

I did a similar thing (used an app after a phone call) last night but this time consciously. So re-starting today, but with some amendations to my rule:

    - No screens after 6 p.m. unless:
    - it's to meet a next-day deadline that was set by someone else or that I set before 6 p.m.,
    - it's for a legitimate, in-person social purpose, such as watching a show or movie that my friend or wife suggested we watch,
    - it's video chatting with a close friend or relative, or
    - it's looking up directions in Google Maps.

The notion of a legitimate in-person social purpose is admittedly vague. But I can at least stipulate that the following are not legitimate (for my purposes): looking up a fact or piece of trivia, looking up YouTube videos, looking up songs (I may add to this list).

I'll print this off so I consult it in case I'm in any doubt about some activity.
