I feel like I'm the only one in the world who is strongly against wearing headphones to listen to music. I hate when I want to talk to someone before class or something but they always got headphones in. I feel like a lot of people listen to music too much and shut off the entire world. It's so often that I'm in the car with my family and I can barely talk to them because they are just blasting music. The conversation can't be heard, and it just feels like useless noise. Also, at the gym listening to music, I personally don't like it because it distracts you from your mental toughness. Workouts are much harder when you have to deal with all your thoughts of giving up while lifting weights, than when you are just distracted in the world of bopping music. What do you guys think? I do listen to music occasionally, but is there a thing of too much of it where it's just noise and shutting yourself off from life?

  2. No, i disagree. I don't think youre listening to the best music at the gym. First off, you shouldn't be having feelings of giving up in the gym. Secondly, if you pick right music, you're golden. It boosts toughness tenfold.

Listening to music is pretty much the 1st thing i do in the morning. I wake up, my phone is connected to my speaker roght next to me & i start bumpimg some stuff relatovely loud. I cant do this aroumd my gf anymore bc she doesnt dig it so i do it mornings im alone. Then carry it to the shower, while eating bfastn etc. Then swotch to headphones for gym/class/longboarding/shoppingn etc.

The thing about the headphones in class is mothafuckas dont wanna be talking. They gove you this hint by putting both sides in their ears.

It makes everything better. Its the one thing that makes everything more emhanced and better. It just depends on what you like & the situation.

For example. When i wake up, i usually wouldnt blast some intense rap. Instead i would play jerry garcia or alabama shakes (purely examples - the mood is calmer songs).

If im at the gym, hell yeah im playing hardcore hnderground hiphop and ac/dc hype shit. Stuff like thst.

  3. I did that in high school because I was a loner and wanted to shut myself out from the world. Ironically enough, it frustrates me a little bit that people like to stay shut out. I don't listen to music in public now. I like to stay aware of my surroundings, plus it's more fun to talk to people. I hate having to tap people on the shoulder in the gym to ask if I can use the bench or whatever, because they're wearing headphones and they won't hear me otherwise. It makes me feel like people don't want to be connected.

  4. I guess it all comes down to personal preference, I purposely shut myself out so people won’t talk to me. I love listening music all the time in general, but like my phone, I also use it as a coping mechanism outside and I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing.

What do you mean "you shouldn't be having feelings of giving up in the gym"?
You can't really control your thoughts. Not that you should. If you don't give up, I think you can have just as many thoughts about it as you want.

And you claim you've never felt like giving up? My first intinct would be to call out bullshit and/or claim you've never actually lifted heavy, but I guess it could also be one of the " we are all different" -things.

Personally I have feelings of giving up every time I squat or deadlift. Before I start working out, my head fills with excuses to take a day off. I'm not perfect, so sometimes I'll take a day off. But in a way I think that's just part of the workout. Every time I train my body, I'll be forced to train my willpower first.

And to the topic: If someone has to do something that requires them to be in public, but also wants their alone-time, I think it's okay. The way our society is designed forces us to be out in public sometimes even when we don't feel like it. And as fun as sociality can be, we all need to take a break from it every now and then.

I do think that there are people who do that too much and who are just escaping all sociality because it can be hard sometimes. I used to be like that and I guess I kinda still am. But while I think those people are being silly and would be happier if they just faced their fear of sociality, I do also realize that forcing them to be social might not be the ideal solution.

It's a little bit like the party hard -culture or excessive usage of social media. I think people are taking it too far and being stupid and that they would be better of if they lived their lives differently, but ultimately it's their choice and we shouldn't try to take it away from them.

I agree with you. I think occasional music is good but when you listen to it constantly it takes you away from the present moment where life is. I was a heavy headphone user for about 4 years which resulted in abscent mindedness on many ocassions for me so i quit it and havent used headphones for 2 years. Its much better. And if i want to listen to misic i play ot out loud and that too rarely.
I think life is much better without one more voice (of music) in my head :)

  8. Shouldnt doesnt equate to me not having those thoughts. You have to shift your mindset from "stop this pain" to "push through it". Music assists in that

Ah, I see. But I think op meant that he is doing just that. He just prefers to do it without the help of music. Or that's how I understood it.

Yeah, last year I'd listen to music between every single class and during class if I was allowed. I just wanted that high of being confident/happy given to you by music. Everyone can admit that music makes you feel better/confident/happy which is good, but the issue comes in where you use it to cope with everything instead of learning to deal with it yourself. The same goes for masturbation/porn, it is a way to "cope" without actually dealing with your feelings. After I quit porn, a lot of my sadness about past breakups and bad experiences came back and I had to deal with it the right way and now I feel way better. But, unlike porn/masturbation, music can be used in moderation because it's a form of entertainment. I personally listen to music probably a few times a week, but when I'm by myself and only for a minimal time. The issue comes in when it's excessive or used to block other people out. I don't think you should need a distraction or another world to jump into and close yourself off, you should be able to function happily in the world without.

I think everyone has thoughts of giving up when you hit your tired point on tough weights. It's not like I up and quit, I just mentally deal with it and push forward. I think that's important, and I feel like if you have music you lose that extra mental workout.

Yeah exactly. I like having that extra mental workout to help me through hard times. A lot of times when I hit my breaking point, my mind goes to thoughts that make me want to quit such as my insecurities and stuff I'm sad about. But, it's a great feeling when you push through

  13. Yeah. Again, depends on the type of music

  14. Yeah see I usually think of my insecurities & bs I'm going thru & thst pushes me thru. Bc if you're lifting actually heavy weights there's a point where you have to take your anger out on the weights

  15. I don't like to use headphones outside home, but I don't really know why. It's like I'm loosing something, and also, it's really uncomfortable, at least for me, to stay right next to strange persons without my hearing.
