I spent all of my teens and 20's watching porn, masterbating 1-2 times a day most days of the week and playing a lot of videogames. I quit videogames about the same time i quit porn and masterbation which is a little over 10 months ago. Ive been going through a lot of withdrawals. I started playing videogames again about 2 months ago and I went into a deeper brain fog state the next day im not sure if it was related to the videogames but i was in a flatline the whole time i was playing videogames. I stopped playing videogames after about 2-3 weeks of casual play due to not knowing the impact it was having on my recovery. I'm not sure if its related to the videogames or just a coincidence of nofap withdrawals hitting me again in its usual cycle of ups and downs. Id like to start playing videogames casually but I feel I should wait until im further down the recovery path or fully recovered im on a 310 nofap hardmode streak at the moment. Does anyone else have experience recovering from a porn and masterbation addiction while playing videogames or quitting videogames along with porn and masterbation?

I think the answer is self evident when you look at what the games are. Although not all games are addictive most do seem to be, or are even designed that way. There's a whole thing about ethical game design that is not based on addictive techniques. The same is true for porn. Porn is usually some kind of video, so you could ask whether all videos are addictive, which of course they're not, even if most are and people may get addicted to YouTube for example, which is probably also a function of the software with features like Autoplay - most people don't pay attention to that or how some people produce their clip with attention grabbing stuff. There are plenty of documentaries, those are videos too just like there are less popular game genres and titles that are probably more unique but people don't look at.

In short, there may a lot of media to "engage" you in an addictive way. And the key difference with games is it is interactive, that gives the software a chance to interact with your neurology. This is what they've done with social media, some of these guys have studied neuroscience.

Whatever you're feeling right now, it will pass and a good level of control on your life will be noticed.

The wish to watch porn never stoped me to play games. Like, when I'm playing I really don't think about it. But I have other pattern. I'm desiding for ex to play for 2 hours and then do stuff, that needed to be done. Then, when I ended I usually desiding to fap and after ... deciding, that I need to play more, because I'm so mentally tired. It may repeat for several times. So, if exclude porn, videogames don't have negative effect on me. At least, I think so.

This seems to be a conditioned reflex.
Look it up if you're interested.

Your brain has learnt to associate equivalent levels of dopamine to both actions, such that their results more or less mirror each other.

    Interesting.

Very confusing subject because I know of people that played more videogames or just as much videogames as me but they didn’t have the symptoms I had. That’s why I’m wondering if it was mostly the pmo that hurt me all these years. I spent a lot more time on videogames than pmo but that was because my sessions were usually quick but often 1-3 times a day almost everyday during my peak of pmo use. Videogames take more time and effort than opening up a website and getting off.

Video Games trigger the same reward centers as porn. This is why they are so popular and addictive. It’s not an accident. They are designed that way. Every time I would play video games I would want to watch porn so I quit them altogether years ago.

Well there are a lot more types of video games than porn. Interesting quote from this article about Journey:

This is interesting to think about in connection with the powerlessness idea in traditional recovery, or even a newer perspective that defines itself as empowering. My take on it is it isn't (or doesn't have to be) limited to this single continuum of powerlessness vs. empowerment. Socially speaking a sense of wonder can connect, cognitively speaking it can be the motivating force for scientists that has a sense of wonder about nature, innovators that have a truly original idea. In other words it can connect with potential, of possibility. It can be argued that in early recovery one should be focused on stabilization and therefore consistency of practice, but I don't think you necessarily see this element of vision in later recovery in practice - even when they have a specific component of that in a program. And that is probably true in recovery because it is true of modern society in general.
