Back when I was first exposed (early 00’s) all I heard anyone talk about was how it affected women and it sounded like the usual “if men like it, it’s bad.” Then more recently I start hearing all this stuff about it causing sexual anxiety in men and making them weird and compulsive and finally recognized that behavior in myself. How long have people known about this?

The effects are still not recognized/understood by the medical and scientific community.
Online communities like this one only became a thing around 2010-2013 (I think it originated on bodybuildingforums), and really only picked up steam since 2015/2016 with the large subreddit (large in size, but mostly cringeworthy content).
For "normies", it's sort of becoming a known thing now. I've heard people at college talk about how if you watch too much porn you won't get a boner.

Over the next 10 years, it's probably going to be a bit of an epidemic because every kid born now has access to high speed internet. So you're going to see a lot more recognition in science and medicine, which will lead to it being talked about in mainstream media, which will lead to people understanding that it's actually a thing. At the moment, if you told someone you had a pornography addiction, even a doctor, they'd probably not take you seriously.

  3. I personally first heard about it in December 2013. It really shook my reality. I used to be on the forums called Your Brain Rebalanced. It seemed it has been around for a while already. I think the nofap subreddit was already there as well. The Your Brain on Porn website was there too and already included a hell of a lot of information and links to poen addiction documentaries and papers. There was also a community called Reboot Nation which I never joined.

If you want to know when the dangers of pornography really started to be known and when people really started to wake up, your best bet would be the date of Gary Wilson's TED Talk on Internet pornography in early 2012.
