I would say there are a few games I'm interested in but yeah pretty much, it takes something special to grab me nowadays.

  3. You need to expand your horizons, there’s so much varied music out there it’s ridiculous. On Spotify I find new music I like every day.

    How old are you?
That's totally fine, it happens because as you grow up, your interests change too.

I'm 33 years old. My earlier years from preadolescence into my early twenties were occupied significantly by video games. In my mid-twenties though I began using heroin intravenously and quickly became both physically and psychologically dependent on it. I still enjoyed playing games even under the influence - that is if I had happened to get my PS3 out of the pawnshop before pawning it again. Regardless I managed to get it back for good ultimately and soon after, against all odds I became the hero in my own life and slayed the heroin beast. While I enjoyed games for a short span of time following that triumph, they quickly became void of their original appeal and I basically just quit them too. It was very disappointing considering a great deal of my years were spent enveloped in videogames and I had mostly nostalgic sentiments when I would think about those times. The reality though is that I just didn't enjoy them as I once had before. It really sucks. Recently I considered how I've always enjoyed Nintendo's franchises (I am a former owner of the 3DS). Considering that handheld gaming was the last hoorah for me as far as gaming now I'm seriously thinking about getting a Nintendo switch lite. I think the handheld concept is more appropriate for myself since I really don't like sitting around playing video games anymore. I like the idea that I can pick it up to play and put it down whenever. plus the library looks to have a stable full of decent and varied titles. I know video games aren't necessarily a productive activity, but it is exciting to consider that I just might reclaim a bit of that joy that I cherished many years ago

Wow, I didn't expect to get a response like this but thank you for it. Its great that you managed to overcome the addiction.

As for the Switch, I own one and would say its worth it if you like Nintendo games, like you say it has a strong library and Nintendo games are generally some of the games I still get some enjoyment out of. The biggest criticism I have of it is the short battery life and I'm not sure if that is remedied by the Switch Lite (I own the OG model).

A lot of games are competitive now and theres no end. I have 2000 hours in cs:go it's ridicules. But games like the witcher 3 and red dead or GTA have a good narative so I feel like I have gained something from playing them.

And yeah resident evil 4 is the best one

I stopped caring about competitive games with Overwatch, I loved the game at first and put so much time into it, and in the end it became a miserable experience that the developers somehow managed to make worse as time went on (the knowledge they were making the sequel the whole time they should have been giving a fuck about the original doesnt shock me but its scummy nonetheless). In the end I had to force myself to stop playing it. That was over a year ago now, and no competitive game since has grabbed me or even interested me at all.

I love Resi 4, I think I played it three times in 2018, its endlessly replayable for me and is short enough that it doesnt get boring. I'm interested to see if we will get a remake of it on the PS5.

It is a more deep question than you think. I have played videogames since I was 3, and it is an activity that I really enjoy.

However, in the recent years, as I have become depressed and life goes idle, it went from a fun experience to a time killer while you wait for nothing. It is not that they aren't good, I have just stopped to know how to have fun in general.

So my advice is, do other stuff besides videogames, and I mean it. Or play games that are more than gameplay, like Mother 3.

  11. I used to love them, but last year saw a shift in my attitude about them, and now I have completely stopped playing any videogame and I can see myself not playing anything for the foreseeable future at least.

I think it has to do with my personal development more so than the games getting worse or anything. I just came to realize how much other stuff I was missing on in my life while playing these games and I just don't wanna keep sabotaging myself like this anymore.

You can say that maybe I have gotten wiser, or dumber, I am not so sure either way. :)

Yeah I've considered the same thing, I find it harder to enjoy games when I'm not doing anything else. I try to be as productive as I can but I find it very hard, I end up spending too much time playing games, and then over time the experience sours because it gets dull.

I have also played Doom, loved it.

I think its a combination of both. As I grow as a person I find myself enjoying less and less games because I dont have the time or energy to play as many as I used to. But I do also think games have gotten worse in the last decade, especially in the last 5 or so years. I hate to pull a "back in my day" but back before 2010 games weren't riddled with microtansactions, overpriced DLC, and other predatory practices, nor were so many games homogenised into a bland sludge like they are now. This isnt to say there arent good game out there, I've said earlier in the thread this year has a lot to appeal to me actually, but I do still think the standard has dropped in recent years.

Similar experience here. I think we're just reaching an age/ stage in our lives, that's all though Infrasapiens' "playing while waiting for nothing" is also eerily accurate sometimes.

A game that's has caught my attention recently was Devil May Cry 5. If you enjoy combo games it's an 8/10 but if you play the whole series before it (excluding DmC reboot, or do if you really feel like it) it easily bumps the rating of DMC5 to 10/10 because you're better at combos resulting in more fun but also more invested in the story and characters.

One game I hate that I played is Deus Ex Human Revolution.... Mainly because it was so good the first time round and now I can't experience that again. Highly recommend also, though it's more of a stealthy type game unless you opt for offensive upgrades (think about a small yet dense RPG, maps not too big but packed with content but collectibles)

Or just play Doom 2016. That's pretty good too. Its simplicity is very refreshing.

  15. DMC: Devil May Cry to me looked honestly like the best one out of all of them, I don’t play those slashing games but my partner does and he loves it so much. Though way back in the day I didn’t mind DMC 4 on the 360 at the time.

All I got out of DMC 5 is Capcom’s latest obsession with cleft chins. lol

I've tried to get into DMC many times and have never been able to, I even went as far as playing all of DMC1 and a decent chunk of 3 and I enjoyed it up to a point but I just dont like the combat system, theres something about it I just strongly dislike that I ant quite put my finger on. Meanwhile I love Bayonetta, so go figure.

I have also played Deus Ex, played it back in 2011 and enjoyed it a lot.

  17. There used to be a time where video games were seen as "for nerds." But that changed as soon as businesspeople realized that there was money to be had in the gaming industry. And so, over time, video games stopped being passion projects designed to give the players a good experience, but addiction traps and monetization schemes. Why do you think there's so many CEO's in the industry who've never played games for a second of their life? Because you don't need experience with gaming to get people addicted to gambling - and let's face it - that's what loot boxes are. We don't earn achievements in games anymore, we buy them. Weapon skins? You used to be able to unlock them through effort, now you just pay for them with real money.

Here's another thing. Game trailers weren't really a thing in the beginning, and the ones that did exist were low-budget, short, clipped together screencaps. Now they have progressed to full-fledged high-budget Hollywood-style animations and live-action takes designed to build as much hype as humanly possible, so that on release date people would happily pay the $60 retail price. By the way, games never used to cost $60. And remember when pre-ordering wasn't a thing? That's because dev's didn't even announce their games until launch date or shortly before. You would just go to the store and see what was for sale. Pre-ordering is just another way to profit off of hype.

And finally, video games have become more and more casual-ized, and less and less hardcore. As such, the "gamer" community now seems to favor graphics over literally everything else. Because visual stimulation is very good at getting attention, even if stories are shallow or non-existent. It takes time to enjoy a good story, but developers can't trust us to take our time with games and not judge them based on graphics, when all other developers are competing for players' money. Plus, our attention spans are so short that we only care about instant stimulation - hence, "muh graphics tho." In addition to this, we have developers now catering to as many people as possible, rather than specific crowds. World of Warcraft, for example, used to be an intricately-designed game with plenty of mechanics, but now it is mechanically threadbare and you only have to push a few keys for the whole game, and there is little room for creativity.

Big business has ruined gaming, and it's all a giant cancerous scam. This is why people like myself are so fiercely loyal to devs like Kojima who actually care about the games they are making. Do you think EA gives a shit about the star wars fanbase by releasing their shitty remakes? Hell no, it's a cash grab riding off the back of a huge trademark. Blizzard died after selling out to Activision, the makers of Call of Duty, who have no rightful place in charge of an MMORPG.

    TL;DR
Loot Boxes, Customization, Big Business, Trailers, Casualization, Quantity over Quality, real-money transactions over merit-based progression

  18. I agree entirely. We are ruled by idiots. And if you can't beat them, but don't want to join them, what can you possibly do?

I also spent many years (read: wasted) playing video games. From Atari to PS1 to PC. Now I'm like.. what a waste of time. When you get older you also start caring more about stuff. And of course your 'future' life. Especially when you start living on your own, your bills to pay increase tenfold. People get more demanding over time. Expectancies from family and people. You see people starting to live together, get kids etc.. and you think to yourself.. why the hell am I still wasting my time playing video games? There's more to life than fiction. Sometimes I watch replays of games from my youth on Youtube and I will feel terrible. I could've gone out and socialize, meet girls, learn new stuff hobbying, but instead I chose to shut my eyes, ignore my feelings and problems and emerge myself into a world that wasn't real. Many of my gaming hours were played alone. Guess what I am now, alone, and lonely!

I agree with a lot of what you have said. I still see a lot of people make the argument that its just my nostalgia talking when I say I prefer older games, but its not. A lot of my favourite games, such as Resi 4 and Shadow of the Colossus, I only played in the tail end of my teens and as such I dont view them with rose-tinted glasses. I look at them and acknowledge their flaws and still consider them masterpieces, so far above 99% of the stuff thats released today that its not even funny to make the comparison. The simple reality is most modern games are simple dopamine traps designed entirely to ensnare, not to provide fun first and foremost. There are exceptions, like there are to every rule, but it does seem like every year that passes brings less and less games I consider to have been worth the time to took to play them. At this rate, by the time it gets to 2022-2023 I'll just be alternating between replaying SOTC, Resi 4, and Okami, and never playing anything else.
