    All,

So, I've been giving this a lot of consideration and knowing how Porn has negatively impacted my life, and so many on this site. It's truly heart breaking to read the story of so many young men. Those that should be out there meeting girls, or boys and having fun... find themselves dealing with porn induced anxiety.

I watched super bowl last night, and remember hearing.. "Be the change"... how do we take action against the porn industry? How do we get them to add warnings to the site that pornography can cause serious harm? I know this feels as though it's swinging back to ultra conservatism.. but, I'm thinking it's only fair to make those first beginning to use porn aware of the problems it causes... it's exactly the opposite of what they're looking to accomplish?

Seriously, there are so many preventative measures for gambling and alcohol abuse? When can they begin to put restrictions on porn?

    Interested to get others thoughts??

    Shaun

There are restrictions on porn, just as there are restrictions on gambling and alcohol. None of these work that well, especially porn. I don't think there is a whole lot you can do. You can try and get people you know to stop watching porn. That is about it.

Feels as though there should be more... I recall the transition when people began realizing the effects of smoking.

  4. Will that work, though? or will it have the opposite effect just like the D.A.R.E program did with drugs? Usually, when people are warned not to do something, they rebel or get more curious and end up doing it anyway.

Interesting perspective... but seriously, could it get any worse? I don't know of anyone out there that are not hooked on PMO from an early age... Maybe I'm just ignorant, and quite possibly so.. but, having been hooked on porn for most of my life, I wish someone would have explained the negative side of porn.

That may be true. But the world is still moving on. Most men are employed, married and most important overall satisfied and happy. How big of a problem is it than compared to other addictions where a small population of society suffer from (alcohol or gambling for example).

  7. Maybe one day, we will live in a society that sees the dangers of pornography. I can't see it happening in our lifetime though. It is becoming more and more prevalent. It's everywhere now from books to television shows. One of the most-watched shows, Game of Thrones, was filled with it. I believe the problem will keep getting worse and worse until most of us are entirely morally decayed.

I agree with you that there should be a better way for the porn industry to keep young people from accessing it besides just asking the individual to click on whether or not they're 18. It's a completely useless preventive measure. I don't think that will ever happen either though. The industry is corrupt, like every other industry. They want young people to become addicted because it will benefit them in the long run, which is why they do the bare minimum legally required of them.

So, I guess it all comes down to getting the laws surrounding pornography changed. How one goes about doing that is beyond me.

I think they should be held accountable for not verifying the age of users under 18. There is no real validation, and most porn users start at a young age.

And with that you hit the nail on the head. As @Moonborn mentioned, you fiddle in people's lives too much with laws and you end up with dynamics like the prohibition where suddenyl people became super creative in making and selling their own booze and you create an entire sub-culture that moves even further away from the law than before.

Government intervention seldomly is the best way to go. Educate as many people as much as possible without gettin on their nerves, make them strong and independent thinkers and personally I would also throw in some super powerful tools like meditation to make them less reactive to having their buttons pushed 24/7 in an environemnt built to make them consume.
I guess that's the best way there is for now. If you rely on the government to handle your problems you're basically fucked in most cases. Rather do what you can in your own life and the people you can reach. Talk to people in a normal way about this instead of hiding. People are surprisingly open to this stuff if you are not trying to force it down their throats.
Back when I started years ago I even got my roommate to try it out for a few weeks after simply chatting about it with him casually.
He never went fullblown NoFap but he decreased his consumption significantly to this day and knows more what he is doing. That's a win in my book.

I agree with you 100%. It's a fine line and don't believe in taking people's choices away, rather educating. I feel, they should be required to add warnings.... e.g. Post a BIG Warning sign in red... this IS BAD FOR YOUR HEALTH! Could cause PIED, Anxiety, Social Isolation, Depression... all round fucked up mental state... With links to more information. There's sufficient empirical evidence that the department of health is justified to enforce rules.

Now... here's the sidebar conversation which I'll start another thread for... I've been doing PMO for 30 years?? Give or take... and I'm now 43.. When I started, it was to magazines, and pictures of girls.. however, working in technology and in the early 2000's the internet took it to a new level and quickly introduced me to hardcore porn.. I could sense when things were going south and I as able to have enough willpower to keep myself away from porn which I new was bad. As years have gone by, and learning from NoFap.. I can see how all PMO has a negative effect, but boys will be boys.... and the question is... I'm now the proud father of boys, and they will be reaching the age where they are becoming more sexually inquisitive.. When I was younger, I masturbated everyday... I expect they will too... BUT.. How do I talk to them about the negative impacts of PORN.. and get them to stay away from it? What do other fathers think?

  11. I'm not a Father, but if I were you, I would talk about all of the negative impacts that it has had on your life and the lives of many others such as us here on nofap.com. Maybe even have them read some posts on here from people who have suffered much from this addiction.

It also might be helpful to find a way to block access to pornographic websites, at least on your home internet. That way, they aren't able to access it when they're at home. And maybe there is a way to keep them from accessing it on their phones as well. You would have to do some research on how to do this, though.

In the end, if they still want to watch it, they're going to find a way. All you can do is educate and warn them and hope that they heed those warnings. I was warned about pornography, but I still indulged to my utter regret.

The Government already regulates porn, to varying degrees in various countries, but it is not as much as a free for all as everyone thinks.

Usually every time the government threatens to clamp down on it, the industry 'self regulates' a little more to ensure that they are left alone. Remember, this kind of material has only been legal a couple of generations. Barely a generation it's been freely available to any man woman or child with a computer or phone.

I think keeping production of this kind of material legal is probably the best way to prevent widescale mistreatment of the actors involved, and keep the money away from organised crime (as much as possible). I'd like to see a restriction on access though. An 'opt in' system from ISPs, and the major porn producers (all the streaming sites are owned by just a couple of companies) restricting their websites to a part of the internet that requires special access through the ISP (e.g. .xxx domains), minimise the possibility of children (and former addicts, etc) stumbling across this stuff by mistake.

Some very intelligent discussion here. The porn industry cynically hides behind the First Amendment to avoid regulation in the distribution of its product, but to completely prohibit “adult” entertainment raises legitimate concerns. There are technological means available to regulate without prohibiting, the technology exists, but until the public and the government recognize this as a problem nothing will happen and we and our children are on our own.

  14. I think that pornography was more regulated when the porn industry had control over their own business. If I wanted to see porn on the internet when I was younger, I had to have the balls to steal my father's credit card. Trust me, I didn't have those kind of balls. The tube sites are not run by the industry, but by Silicon Valley types who create algorithms to make people spend more of their time there. We know this because tube sites are an almost identical model to YouTube. This also makes the types of porn people want to see escalate due to exposure, which makes companies pay porn stars less for more dangerous acts. It's bad for everyone involved, the makers and viewers.
