What is the view of your community / area / country on porn and mastrubating?

In the UK it’s not appropriate for older relatives to ask openly like that. But there is an amount of banter that goes on between peers.

So Pakistan is the second nation where porn is viewed the most and it makes me sad seeing lots if young peeps addicted to this shit here no one openly talk about it as it is strictly haram to watch porn or masturbate but it's a taboo here no one talk about it but everyone watches it and it's making guys animals tbh there are still banters about it between guys also celebrities and movies showing vulgarity play a major rule in promoting porn

Hm, interesting. I don't know to be frank. I'm Dutch myself, and yes I hear banter about porn sometimes, but never serious personal details. And I don't actually see a lot about it either, but I don't really follow news channels or other big media channels.

 

Good question. To me, the conviction that God condemns porn actually hasn't helped me a whole lot in getting rid of my addiction, I feel like. However, it did help me to realise that I was addicted, as as soon as I realised that what I was doing wasn't good (which was when I was regularly PMO'ing) I wanted to quit, and found that I couldn't. People that aren't religious might think it's just natural (which I suppose it is ) and won't be bothered by their PMO'ing until much later, when they find they waste too much time, or have ED, etc.
It should certainly have an influence on the view of the population, I reckon. When I told my Christian tutor group I was a porn addict, nobody raised the question "How do you know? Isn't your porn usage fairly normal?". However, there was one guy in our year (also Christian, as I did a Christian education/course/'thing' for a year) who did in fact not see the problem with porn. However, a few months later, when there was a workshop for dealing with porn addiction, he did show up...

 

Good points. It's a complicated subject.

Religion can encourage feelings of shame around sexuality, which isn't good. But religion can help people realise they have a problem also.

Being quite coldly rational about the problem can help, which generally isn't a common approach in religion.

That's true! Especially because (at least in most churches) it is rarely talked about. I'm sure many Christians (and probably Jews and Muslims too) have the idea that they are the only one in their religious community with the problem, while in fact, even some of the elders (not sure if that's the right word, I mean men with an important function within the church) might struggle with porn addiction. And knowing that other people struggle with it too could really help a victim to be confident enough to tell someone about his struggles.

 

UK. Noticing more people being ambivalent about porn in my peer groups lately. Still a long way to go. Most banter is still implicitly pro-porn, but it's an improvement from 0% anti-porn sentiment to maybe 5% over the last few years. Porn isn't really talked about between generations, it's somewhat taboo; not enough to stop jokes being made but too much for serious dialogue to be had.
