Should I Quit YouTube?

Discussion in 'Self Improvement' started by Deleted Account, Feb 10, 2020.

  1. YouTube is pretty much the only website on the internet I visit regularly. Is it really worth the time, tho? I only use it for music and information/educational stuff. But I wonder how much value it’s adding to my life. What do you think?

depends on the "music and information/educational stuff"

if its not the kind of music that can set off triggers I think it's ok. As for the information/educational videos if you really need it then watch it if it something to pass the time its something to pass the time. either way it doesn't hurt.

I use youtube for mostly music/meditaion. You just got to find a proper use for it.

Yes definitely. you use it for only 1% of all your time. rest is just waste. if you want to hear songs then you can go with some other music player et but avaoid youtube as much as possible. it does occupies you at night when you go to sleep, it occupies you every morning. Better leave it and you'll see huge difference in your free time in just few days.

you'll start thinking that what should I do now when you are not using youtube. add an activity in your life to fill the time like book reading, rubic cuve solving, english crosswords etc..

It’s easy to be addicted to it just like with all social media. If you are truly using it well then it’s no problem. Many people use it in the same way we all used to... USED TO... use porn: watch this for a bit - next - watch that for a bit - next - another one... etc

In this way, YouTube is a nasty dopamine killing monster.

There is an addon called distraction free youtube that removes the sidebar recommendations, that might help. The site is useful but it is also specifically designed to hold you attention and lead you to more and more videos.

It can be a valuable tool but it can also be a waste of time and a procrastination accessory. Does it have to be all or nothing? Do you have to quit entirely? Could you take a break for a week and see how you feel?

  7. If you're learning new information from the educational content you watch on YouTube, then it does add value to your life because you're getting something out of it.

Plus there are loads of people who use YouTube the way you do, no need to overthink dude, it really isn't doing you harm unless you're actively searching videos that can provide triggers for you.

  8. I used to be pretty addicted to YouTube. I'd constantly be clicking on new videos, refreshing my subscriptions, and generally just wasting my free time on it. That's the problem with social media sites / apps. They are made to suck you in. It's easy to get lost in them. It's why so many people waste their time on Facebook, Instagram, or Snapchat.

I eventually got sick of wasting my time in front of a laptop / computer screen. There's only one creator I watch daily (Good Mythical Morning). I'll watch their recent video on lunch break, maybe watch another subscription if the video seems interesting and is short, and that's it. I'll also occasionally use YouTube to listen to focus music when reading, especially if my ADHD is acting up. I make sure I'm on the site / app for an hour or less.

Sounds like you're using YouTube in a non-harmful way. Doesn't seem like you're wasting hours staring at a screen. There's a lot of good content on YouTube, and it's great if you're using it to learn new things. I don't see any reason why you should give it up unless it becomes harmful to you.

  9. It is up to you. Just stay away from the comments section.

  10. I don't bother reading the comments on youtube. It's toxic. Thanks for the advice.

  11. If it's all you do all day every day then maybe cut back on it.

My cousin quit YouTube despite it being lucrative and having a million subscribers because she couldn't handle the toxic comments anymore.

  12. YouTube is mostly filled with clickbait, triggering content. You should take a break for a very long time, unless you really really need it in your life.

  13. Depends on the content. Sure, there's the bad stuff. But you can block it through your settings. But yeah, I understand your point. YouTube is mostly a time sink.

  14. You should only quit YouTube, if it’s preventing you from recovering from PMO. I deleted all my social media accounts including Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter, Reddit etc. I have a YouTube account attached from Google, but I have the bad content blocked in case I need to use it for school/self help stuff.

  15. Your question does not sound complete. I suspect you just want to cut down on the time you spend there.
And we all know there is enticing stuff on youtube. It's easy to relapse there. I need to set time limits on myself whenever I am on youtube. Suddenly an hour is gone and I only looked at crap I have seen a thousand times. Then sometimes I begin looking at videos that only urge me to relapse. We would all benefit from setting limits on our time there. Good luck!

Same here dude! This is also a really good question. Youtube can be an addiction if you use it for wrong purpose, just because Youtube has so much triggering content and titles. It is better when you dont watch to videos where there are woman in it. Dont click on videos about relationship or sex related topics. Dont click to videos just because of curiousity or you find a girl "cute" or "hot". It sounds hard but dont subsribe to woman (if you are heterosexuell). If you subscribe to them unsubscribe them all.( There is a possibility you can get easily triggered) If you saw a woman is talking in a video just delete the recommandation as fast as you can (I would give this advice also to woman) I can talk for myself, I relapsed because the channel Nobita from Japan introduced an old Milf porn actress in one of his newest interviews and so many other videos about this stuff more. And as you clicked on that once you will get over time always the same type of recommanded videos about this stuff. I would also not recommand you to watch ASMR Videos. It is exactly the same trap you will fall over and over again. If you just want to learn languages and listening to music it is all fine. But please dont fall to temptation when you see your urges getting bigger and bigger-just dont click on them, otherwise you will fall to old habits and dont tell to yourself " 1 time is okay"....no it is not. I am also keep on doing mistakes but I dont do the same mistakes more than 3 times at least.
If there are just 4-5 channels you follow for your education it is totally fine. What do you mean?

I personally have to stay away from YouTube at work and usually at home I stay away. Too many triggers for me and it is easy to waste time I should using for work. Once I’m home I’m busy with kids so usually I fit in something related to my interests.

There may be better uses for your time though. Or a better balance. If you are thinking about it I’d say try living without it and do something else like go outside or socialize. See if there are improvements in how you feel.

  18. How can we answer this. You may or may not be wasting your time with it. Only you can evaluate this.

  19. Only subscribe to quality content and don't get sucked in to the junk by whatever means possible. YouTube is an absolutely fantastic resource. I don't watch any TV anymore, but I don't spend hours watching fail videos like I used to! I largely just view by subscription tab and only seek new creators when I'm pursuing new interests. I'm also quick to unsub if something isn't worth my time or I'm losing interest. I probably only have about 15 subscriptions at any one time.

Good luck anyway, we should all try to be more mindful of how we spend our time, my advice is just based on my experience
