Tapering vs Cold Turkey... Question for the experienced

Discussion in 'Rebooting - Porn Addiction Recovery' started by Deleted Account, Apr 19, 2020.

  1. I'm at the end of a whole octopus of mental and emotional ropes here, I really need to drop the porn and alcohol use right now. I would try some meetings but things are closed because of the virus. I'm wondering the general consensus on here about weaning off vs going cold turkey. I think there's a chance I could wean down just vanilla p once or twice a week and a couple drinks before bed. And then to no p and drink on days off. And then to no pmo or drinking, maybe when sober meetings have started back up again. I have my doubts that I can stick to just a bit of the vices tho. But three days ago I was perky as a fuckin peacock about going cold turkey and I just woke up to a sore dick and liver and really hopeless soul, the whole sick feelings and doubt are starting to spook me. I've had some issues with suicidal stuff in the past and dropping these two things are integral to not letting shit get out of control in my noggin, so just trying to set myself up with a good structural plan that can hopefully hold me til I can find opportunity for therapy or group meetings etc. Your thoughts would be thoroughly appreciated.

I think it's difficult to have the discipline to really wean yourself off of P. If you can manage it, maybe that would work for you. Personally, I try to approach it with the attitude of quitting cold turkey and starving myself of all of it. If I mess up, I'll do my best to forgive myself, but I don't give myself any cheat days or anything like that.
NoFap seems to me to be built on starving yourself of PMO to fix your brain. Lots of folks go hard mode, monk mode, and the general goal is a clean 90 days of nothing for a reboot. I don't think weaning is conducive to that. But I haven't really tried it aside from when I would lie to myself and say "just this once", so maybe someone else who has tried it for longer can answer.
As for alcohol, I hope someone else on here can help you. I really don't know.
    Good luck!

  3. @Mr. 180 Hey thanks for the thoughts man, I totally believe in the 90 day period reset philosophy, but honestly I'm not just trying to reset my brain at this point. The priority for me is to let go of porn use for the rest of my life. So I think I am gonna start out slow with just my personal goals and hopefully in a month or so from now I'll be rockin the no pmo status, congrats on 334 days by the way damn!

I hope it works out for you! You'll just have to remember to limit yourself to only what you decide to allow for the time being.
    Good luck!

I think cold turkey is almost always the best route. Before coming to NoFap, I used to try to wean myself off slowly, but that never worked well - one thing leads to another, and suddenly your right back where you started.
As for feeling down and out - yeah, that's how it's for just about everyone. Just hang in there and things should get better eventually.

I don't know what your PMO habits are and what your drinking habits are? And how old you are?

I would lean to the side of weaning off.. especially the alcohol mate

but if I were in your place I would chose 1. Choose which one u want to drop first, PMO or alcohol, wean it off and ride out 1,5 years before taking on the other one

I tried weaning many times before and it was unsuccessful every time.
