Anxiety and Depression get me all the time

    Hi Porn Addiction forum,

    For years I would most of the time find sneaky ways of spending at least 1-2 hours watching pornography just so that I can forget about my real life problems. It's become a problem because it's been at least, oh goodness, at least 16 years of my life wasted consuming hours and hours of overwhelmingly arousing content.

    After discovering the NoFap community, that has given a glint, even if small, of hope to be able to overcome this addiction. I'm 28 now and I feel like I've wasted those hours away because I wasn't able to find no other coping mechanism to deal with loneliness, anxiety and depression. And, that's why I would recur to pornorgraphy over and over. I'm looking to forward to do at least a one month cleanse and maybe get rid of this addiction once and for all as a long term goal. But, I gotta take it one step at a time. What I'll do is go to the support group sub-forum and sign up for one of those to see if with some support I can get through this.

    I hope that the nofap community is doing their due diligence to take care of themselves during this horrible COVID-19 pandemic situation. I'm sure that if we work together, we can overcome this pandemic just fine.

    I also suffer from anxiety and depression (and loneliness), and I've found that all the typical advice helps.

    For me the big pillars are:

    1. Getting enough sleep (8-9 hours for me)
    2. Shamatha-Vipashyana and Loving-kindness/Compassion meditation (like Tonglen meditation)
    3. Exercise (I mainly do calisthenics)
    4. Healthy diet (I do Paleo but you might want to experiment a little, just eat real food, no processed stuff.)

    Maybe give those a shot.

    The anxiety and depression that you experience is almost certainly being compounded by your use of pornography.

    Read up on the effects of use on porn on your reward centre and stress response. Your Brain on Porn is a good resource. It overloads your brain with dopamine, but your brain can't handle these levels so reduces dopamine receptors. This numbs your pleasure response which definitely contributes towards depression.

    I have experienced both in the past, and the anxiety / social anxiety was extreme. Both have improved massively. I don't seem to have any issues with social anxiety at all now

  8. Anxiety and depression are serious medical diseases. If you suspect you experience them you need to consult a professional psychologist immedietely. Take care of yourself and do not believe in magical, easy treatments. This is serious.
