Restlessness / cannot sleep

    I'm new and I will introduce myself at a later time (that will be a long post...) but I already have a question:

    How do you handle the feeling of restlessness? I haven't started a reboot yet, but I already tried to reduce masturbation in the past. I quickly get to the point where my whole body feels tense and restless and I cannot relax or sleep. Although I may be tired, my muscles in my whole body simply won't rest. I turn around in my bed with an urge to masturbate. After I give in and do that, immediately calmness and relaxation fills my body and I can sleep like a baby.

    What can I do in such situations? I need to have a strategy before I commit to a reboot, because otherwise I'm certain to fail.

    Its just about finding a method that works for you. Meditation, cold showers, exercise all help to stave off urges. Anything really that can take your mind of it

    If you had never masturbated before, then you would not have known about the stress relieving feeling you get from it, so you would have used something else or not have gotten that much stressed/ restless in the first place. Why do you get restless?

    The problem in these situations is the body, more than the mind. At other times it's surely a mental thing, but the situations I am talking about are when I am not being triggered and not sexually excited, and I just want to rest or sleep... and I can't, because my body will not let me relax. I use masturbation like a medicine to cure a physical problem. I'm wondering what I could do instead... especially when this is acute. When I turn around in my bed at 3am, cold showers or exercise seem counter-productive. Or are you saying that if I exercise during the day I am less likely to feel restless at night?

    Avoid looking at a screen for about 30 minutes to an hour before you go to sleep. If you like to read, I would recommend reading in bed before going to sleep. That always makes me sleepy.

    Very true... but to my shame, I've been masturbating for over 20 years so I cannot even remember a time without it. I need alternatives.

    I really don't know. I would think some body chemistry or hormons are out of balance, but I'm clueless.

    with our condition it is mental but we feel it physically i know if i masturbate i will sleep easily and feel relaxed without it i struggle to even go to bed and don't have a good sleep. But don't want to use masturbation for that, after 15 days of abstaining from PMO i started feeling a physical sharp pain around my balls and when i masturbated it was gone as if there was nothing causing it, i think it is withdrawal symptom!

    I also have been masturbating all my life i wonder what if i hadn't done it or now that i have always masturbated i don't know anything else and what would i do without it. I have hope in reboot i'll try my best at it! You need to find out why you have this problem and what can help you otherwise you would be masturbating to sleep forever. Share your experience when you fix your problem, i think you can do it, good luck

    This is a common addiction, and there is no easy answer.
    As has already been mentioned practice good sleep hygiene.
    Wake up at the same time everyday no matter how tired you are.
    Exercise everyday.
    Only lay down or use the bed when you are ready to go to sleep.
    Exhaust yourself before you lay down in bed.
    Try long showers.
    Try making your room colder.
    You may need something engrossing to take your mind off of it, in which case TV before bed might work.
    You are in for some rough times. You are going to have to be tough, motivated, and smart.
    Take it one day/night at a time.
    You can try Zquill or something similar to get started.

    Sometimes it helps me to read until my eyes get heavy. I’m having the same issue at the moment, so decided to come on nofap and read through some of the posts. I’ll even read someone’s journal from the beginning until I’m exhausted. As for relaxing the body, try tensing your muscles for about 10-15 seconds starting with your legs and working your way up the body. That should help release the tension. Massage your jaws if they are feeling tense. Hope you get some rest.
