    Hello,

I was born in Iran in a Muslim family but I became completely irreligious before I was 18. I consider myself a liberal without any religious beliefs. But as I study history and such things, I liked to know more about Christianity as a part of western culture (or whatever you can call it). It is hard to make myself clear. I hope there is no misunderstanding nor offence in my expression.

So, I was curious and wanted to know some opinions from Christians about quitting/reducing porn and masturbation. I am curious about the way you think and the way you benefit from your beliefs in this matter. Simply, How Christianity helps you in this?

As I somehow emotionally attached to Christianity (without even knowing much about it), and like it and respect it in some ways, Perhaps you can also say something that is encouraging and helpful for me too.

Thanks for reading and for any help.

(if it's OK, Please don't move the thread)

  2. As Christians we recognize our sins and inadequacy before a holy God. Jesus came as a sacrifice for our sins. When we put our trust in the salvation he provided we are cleansed of all sins past present and future. In addition when we trust Christ his spirit comes to live inside us and the spirit will reveal truth, guide, and strengthen us if we surrender ourselves to God. We begin a personal relationship with God. If we trust Christ for our salvation, but keep sinning, this relationship is diminished as well as the benefits that go with it. That is why we are trying to quit porn for good so the relationship can become closer and we will experience freedom from the prison of habitual sin. Then God will gradually restore our mind, body and spirit. As we continue to surrender to God we become better husbands, fathers, co-workers and friends. We also receive love, joy, peace, patience, goodness, kindness, gentleness, and self-control.

Does this sound like something you are interested in? If so you can begin this spiritual journey by receiving the forgiveness God has provided in Jesus. You start by talking to God and saying something like this, " God I know I have done wrong and I need a savior. I accept the sacrifice you provided when you died on the cross for me. I want you to save me and begin changing my life so I can experience an abundant life. Amen." Did you pray that prayer?

I am interested and thank you, But this is too far. I can't pray even if I want to. I am technically an atheist and I'm not able to change this (and I don't want to).
Maybe I want something to trick my mind and brain. I mean, Like, If you respect something/someone, That thing can encourage you to stay away from something they don't approve. You don't have to believe it religiously. You just have to like it.

  4. Unfortunately (maybe?), Jesus did not give us the option to go halfway with him. He plainly states that he is God himself, the Creator. So, if you do not believe in God, then you do not believe in Christ. It would of course be madness to rely on an imaginary figure for support in a time of crisis.

You are welcome here in this Christian community. I hope that we can continue to grow in our understanding of and friendship with one another.

  5. It is Jesus who gives us strength when we get to the end of ours. It is the Spirit of Christ who gives us direction when our own moral compass fails. It is the Father who loves us and affirms us when all others let us down.

I wouldn't call it halfway. I clearly said I have no religious beliefs at all. Nonetheless, Many of people I've seen had a little belief and they mainly ask help when they are in crisis or something. However, I said I'm not one of them. So, They're generally not very religious and do get help (by feeling better, etc).

I also said you don't have to think of something as a god or religion to get help from it. As an example, Imagine you respect a person called X and he tells you not to do Y. Doesn't it encourage you to avoid Y? Also, Do you call it "relying on X for support in time of crisis"? IMO, It's just that if you respect X, Then it helps you to refuse to the things he dislikes. I don't need to "rely on X's direct support (as a god would do)".

I don't want to make any argument, even friendly.
Nor to adopt religious beliefs (That doesn't mean I dislike/like reading something religious).

    Thanks.

  7. Gotcha! The person you respect is the person who does believe. I thought you were saying that Jesus was the person you respect, which wouldn't make sense, since you think he is a fairy tale. Thanks for clarifying!

I think you got me right. I respect Christianity as a whole (in some ways), Not that there is a particular believer that I respect. But both works in the same way.
I can say I like Christian chants, Churchs' architecture and such things. I feel some peace with them. I also have a Christian friend.

What religious texts/verses give you more self-control and encourage you to don't give up in the difficult moments of reboot phase?

  10. “You must put to death, then, the earthly desires at work in you, such as sexual immorality, indecency, lust, evil passions, and greed (for greed is a form of idolatry). Because of such things God's anger will come upon those who do not obey him.”

  11. Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!
Psalm 139:23-24 ESV http://bible.com/59/psa.139.23-24.ESV

But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. http://bible.com/59/gal.5.16-24.ESV
