I guess I'm going to take this seriously now.

I am reluctant to return to this community as I enjoy a lot of my lifestyle I have right now, and I don't want to change it all to something I don't desire (i.e. the life of highly regulated work all the time no fun person). I had thought that I could do this on my own, but I really can't. I never really took it seriously, and hence why after 4 years of trying, I still am slipping back into old habits. I can't afford to do this anymore. I almost sacrificed my life, my future, my family, and for what?
I need to move past this already.

Welcome back, I hope you find the lifestyle balance that works for you!

I'd encourage you to challenge your idea of what this new lifestyle could be as well. From your post, "work all the time no fun", makes me wonder if you consider NoFap and a hardline strict lifestyle one in the same?

Personally I find having plenty of fun things helps this process. It's true that instant gratification activities, like video games or social media, have the potential to also overload us with dopamine without 'earning' it. However, more natural things like socialising, working on a hobby, or doing exercise, will also give us this dopamine hit for all the right reasons.

If anything, good R&R can improve productivity - just look at recent studies on 4 day working weeks, or the recognised necessity of group sports in the military during times of peace and deployment.

I think I do kind of confuse the two in my head, yeah. The time when I made the most progress is when I used this site, but I also had started going overboard and giving up activities I actually enjoyed, like gaming with friends. I do find that if you play games as a social aspect, and go for games high in difficulty, it can be legitimately reward, not the junk rewards you get from easy games. I do agree that doing things like socialising, exercising, and working on hobbies would help. I largely do all of these already, I just have sporadic periods where I watch porn and just forget about all of my life that I've built up, and I just wanna be done with it already.

Sounds familiar to me. I'll have times where I give up for a week or two, but in general my life is on track. Can be frustrating because it feels like things are 90% together at a point.

However, I was recently advised to search for one or two additional things I wanted in my life. Things that could replace what I was using porn for. For me this means taking more risks socially, and so far things like striking up a conversation or just smiling and saying hi to people is providing that extra thing that was missing.

You might need just one new activity, or maybe to invest more time into something you're already doing, and you won't have the same reason to go back to that habit.
