Which is worse for you? Porn or masturbation?

I can go a week or two without watching porn but I seem to not be able to get past 3 days without masturbation. So I'm just curious, which is worse?

masturbation without a doubt. Porn is merely something to masturbate to. That said, they should both be avoided as porn is the precursor to masturbation.

But it is always the orgasm from masturbation part that harms us the most, with or without porn!

  3. I think porn is the biggest problem because without the huge exposure to fantasies on the internet, its possible there would be less sex crimes. I notice if edging and watching porn it takes alot to get out of that place where you want to orgasm. Without porn, getting rid of masturbation and bad effects of over climaxing would be alot easier, for me anyway. I would say porn is the worst because it can turn your sexual desires on and off like a machine and damages you, your perspective and confidence of everyone. Both are bad, but orgasming is a natural part of life, porn is not. The only real reason why over climaxing is possible is because a man is compulsed to porn and fantasies. Without porn I think it's likely a man would be more attracted to women.

Over exposure of both porn or masturbation does bad things to people.

Porn is worse. There is no doubt about it in my mind.

I see you've had problems abstaining from masturbation more than porn. Let me ask you this. When you relapse (masturbate), do you, or can you, do it without pornographic images in your mind?Memories involving porn, sex, or unrealistic scenarios? If you can, then good for you and masturbation is a problem for you. But for most of us here, it is the 'hit' of dopamine we get from watching porn or any other compulsive behaviour. That is what we relied on when bad situations came along, and that is the root of our addiction.

I would also like to stress to you the delineation between abstaining, and recovering, because you only seem to be abstaining. How much effort are you putting into living the lifestyle you want? Into achieving your goals? Into raising your standards? These are the questions to think about.

Anyway, that's my view. I hope you will be successful soon.

    Good luck.

    DS.

Porn is showing us how masturbation is not helping us. We become so addicted to masturbation that we become sick and have to give it up. Porn is actually helping us give up masturbation for good otherwise we would just be pulling ourselves off from time to time and still stuck in the rut. The reason this site is so good and is an antidote for porn is that it is freeing us from sexual desire. Cut off all your porn subscriptions and subscribe to NoFap. That is the antidote. :)

No I don't need to watch porn to masturbate. Before I started to read about what porn does to your dopamine levels and masturbating and all that, yeah I watched porn while I masturbated. But now I use pictures when I do relapse. I can do it without looking at anything and just picture stuff in my head and what not but most of the time I am looking at something

  7. Porn is worse, though ideally both should be avoided.

Masturbation by itself to fantasy alone can cause ED as well so to me they are one in the same. Any time a fantasy is taking precedence over real sex it creates a problem.

Porn releases a lot more dopamine through clicking and finding variety and it also fuels more masturbation. For example a guy could not be feeling horny at all but start looking at porn and is now horny. It is manufactured arousal so it can cause overmasturbation.

It's this that is the problem I think. Masturbation is perfectly normal, but it should be a way of releasing tension and reacting to being horny if anything. Masturbating to imagery is like you say, manufactured arousal. The arousal should come from your body.

This might seem like splitting hairs, but the most damaging thing is not porn per se. It is high-speed internet porn. Back in the day when us 'mature' guys and gals looked at porn it was a saucy story; it was a topless, buxom babe in a infamous newspaper; it was Playboy or Playgirl. As far as I am aware, although such things were harmful in objectifying men and women, they did not cause the horrendous problems we are seeing now.

Do not make the mistake of underestimating masturbation. It is well worth noting that one of the biggest releases of dopamine come from edging: basically extended masturbation. That massive release of dopamine occurs even without porn. Let's be honest here: most of us when masturbating without artificial stimuli, will then create some sort of porn-like scenario in our minds. Personally, I did this for 30 years before I even saw porn for the first time! Yet, I can say that three decades of chronic masturbation totally ruined my life and turned me into a hermit that shied away from social interaction because I just wanted to go home and play with myself. :(

The following article addresses the matter of whether masturbation is a normal and natural thing for humans to do. The Western assumption that '95% of boys and men masturbate at some point in their lives and the other 5% are liars', is clearly not based on the experience of males globally. This confirms my gut instinct that masturbation is unnecessary and artificial. It is more the product of a sexualised AND stressful society. Later in this same article it is noted that monkeys have been observed masturbating in captivity but not in the wild. I will quote an excerpt of a fascinating editorial, but you can read the whole article here:

Fascinating read, Igy. I wonder how it became so normal for us then?

I'd definitely say porn is the worse of the two, but that's because of how brainwashing and innaccurate it is etcetc, whereas I don't really know the science behind masturbation (there's a lot of conflicting opinions). Does anyone have any studies/articles they could refer me to in this regard?

I think this is interesting... I've noticed that after I masturbate, I get frustrated with my kids and wife more quickly. I have far less tolerance than normal. In general, I get kind of pissy. I also find it's harder for me to cool down (temperature) throughout the day. However... when I have sex with my wife and orgasm, I'm content, peaceful, and happy. I enjoy being around my family.

So... there is something to be said there. There is SOMETHING different from a self induced O compared to an O caused by my wife.

To this question I answer with another one - Which is worse for you? To be killed in a car crash or to drown on a ship?

I am not surprised at all! Honestly, I get frustrated sometimes when I see people HERE on a website called noFAP say that masturbation is normal. I've been trying to give up PMO for a year and two months now and in countless relapses I just masturbated to fantasy. The terrible effects were just the same and I assure you, guilt was %20 of that. The shame feeling we get after we masturbate is a natural one, the same kind which we are continously told is a byproduct of religious brainwash. Yet people in and out of nofap continue to point at porn for their problems, and many fapstronauts have no idea why they're quitting M along with porn. And when they complete 90 days, they credit their abstinence from porn for the benefits and happiness. Porn is nothing on its own. The major harm porn inflicts us is that we masturbated 90% of the time after we watched porn, meaning that porn is very connected to masturbation. Porn is just material for those who are unwilling to use their imaginations or are just tired of their own fantasies. Quitting porn alone does little more than merely detaching one's masturbation habit from porn. You quickly find a picture of a girl or just their hair to be enticing and you masturbate to that. As for the objectifaction of women, it was our masturbating to them that made us objectify them, not porn which is a catalyst for that.

  17. Does it make a difference? My perspective is that masturbation and porn are not that different at all in terms of the moral aspects. In porn women are objectified and portrayed as overtly sexual creatures who want nothing but a dick, enjoy getting violated, repressed, supressed and being subjected to violence. There is no attention paid whatsoever to their feelings, their emotions and to who they are as a person. How is it any different when we masturbate? In our head too there is no regard for their feelings, emotions or who they really are.

As for the physical effects i think it depends. If you're way deep in fap and have screwed your body quite a bit even fapping once is very harmful.Still porn, i think is more harmful. It has to say, a more "sharper edge".It's effects are more, stronger and surface in a shorter period of time.It directly screws your brain ( which is the central part of us) rewiring it and eventually leading to PIED,fetishes and god knows what else crap.It will mess you up big time. You become a prisoner in you head bound by thoughts that are not even you own.

In the end, both are harmful.Porn compliments masturbation and vice-versa.

Porn specifically is what screws the brain up. So this is much worse than just M.
But M still is not good for you.

  19. OBVIOUSLY: PORN IS A BLESSING!

It's a ridiculous question of course. In a world overrun by chickens which is worse a chicken or an egg?

But technically speaking: yeah of course porn is "better".
Porn is made and exists for only one reason: to masturbate to. It's for ppl with weak or lazy imaginations.

Fucking yourself is the real problem, porn only exists because we live in societies full of lazy self-fuckers.

This is what makes porn "good", even a "white knight" a blessing: Porn allows everyone a gateway into what ppl are actually thinking and wanting when they are masturbating. It brings the mental stink to the surface. And it's sheer quantity and massive consumption shows just how many of us stinkers are out there.

And in some weird twist: porn holds up a mirror to ourselves... makes a near unconscious activity visible to our more aware states of mind... and we don't like what we see.

Massive amounts of people have been hurting themselves, diminishing their lives, being bad friends, shitty SOs, distracted insensitive parents because of self-fucking. But it's never been anything ppl talked about much. Porn has changed all that!

    as DannyCool already aptly said:
